A friend has a Birmingham Small Arms made .270Win Bolt action hunting rifle he wants to get rid off. I was wondering If I could get a ball park value.

Rifle seems like its in good mechanical shape, bore is really bright and a mirror (really, it looks brand new). Blue on gun is a little worn, maybe 50%. Stock has a few minor scratches, nothing major, but is a decent Monte Carlo style stock made out if what looks like walnut.

Rifle has a Leupold 3-9x Vari-X II scope in good condition.

Anyone know of a good value based on the description?

EDIT: after some google searching, it appears to be a BSA Model E sporter Built on Surplus P-14/17 rifles. Rifle is more then a simple Sporter job, but a full blown rifle build with new barrel, stock, action has been modified, new sights, ect.

I will get some pics up after I get a chance to take some.

The scope is worth as much as the rifle.
$300.00 scope
$300.00 rifle

So are you saying its a $300 rifle, plus the $300 scope for a total of $600? Or are you saying its a worthless rifle and a $300 scope for a total of $300?

The rifle is not your normal sportered military rifle, its a full sporting rifle bult on a receiver, the only thing left really of the military gun is the magazine and action.

In truth I think Gord is being generous. The scope is worth abut $200 and the rifle a bit more - about $250. Factory-produced "Custom" Model 17 Enfields are not rare by any means and selling prices seem to range between $200 and $300.

BTW, that older Vari-X 2 is nearly as good as the new VX-1 which can be had for about $250 if you shop around.

I agree with the 3+3 evaluation. New VX2 plus of $400. Thou the do come on sale for $350. maybe part out and put a cheap used scope on it.
