My buddy has an older BSA in 30/06. When out hunting he had the rifle accidentally discharge when he chambered a round and closed the bolt. This has happened twice now, any thoughts or ideas out there about what might be wrong?

What's wrong is your buddy has not stopped using it and has not taken it to a gunsmith...

This rifle could be a commercial model or a military alteration of a P17

You buddy should take it to a gunsmith.

The sear adjustment could have been played with or perhaps something broke. In any case if he continues to ignore it he will shoot someone, perhaps himself.

First off I agree that your buddy should stop using the rifle until the problem is found and repaired.

Second, like mentioned above incorrect sear engagement either from being an out of adjustment trigger or warn parts could be one culprit.

The other thing that I would look at is perhaps the firing pin is dirty, rusted or covered in old dry grease which can cause it to get stuck forward making it hit the primer causing the round to discharge once the bolt is fully in battery.

Someone had a piss poor trigger job done. Similar incident,I nearly got shot in the head when my buddy took his safety off and the rifle fired. Luckily his muzzel was pointed up and the bullet went over my head. Stop using it.
