can any one tell me what the two circle like clamp holes? are for that are just in front of the magazine well and behind the main barrel screw. they do not seem to serve any purpose that I can see.

The British used a different type of sling arrangement for long range target shooting than we use today. The rear sling loop was detached from the butt stock, and put into the attachment point that you are asking about. The sling was then adjusted to fit around the shooters left arm thus forming a loop from the front swivel to the center swivel.
It is possible that the trigger guard of your rifle has been replaced, because in 1915, this feature was one of the things that was eliminated to help speed up wartime production.
