bsa sweet 17? both crap?

i took a look at the sweet 17's at bass pro the other day and noticed theres 2 different models. one that sells around $85 and the other $200. iv seen alot of talk on hear about them and wont to know if people are only complaining about the cheap one or both of em. the only difference i could tell was the cheep one had front parallax adjustment and the $200 one had a side adjustment.
im thinking of getting the cheap one and just returning it if its that bad.

any opinions on eather would be great but please be specific about the one you have.
 
I got the Sweet 22. I don't demand too much from my scopes, just range target shooting to 100 meters. The image is bright and clear enough, similar to my Bushnell 4-12X x 40AO.

I haven't checked for repeatability of adjustments, the lack of which was the complaint of some users. Since I don't fiddle with the adjustment dials much, I don't really care for repeatability. Depends on your intended use for the scope.

I bought it cos it was cheap and thought that the bullet drop compensator was neat....but haven't used the BDC yet. I just zero my scope and adjust the objective focus, for the range I use it the most, 100 meters and that's that.

i have one (the cheaper one) the turrets are decent clicks (feeling) and pretty repeatable.

BUT! the BDC turret is no where even close! 100 on scope = 100yds 0, 125scope - 200yd zero, 260scope - 300yd zero.. those are just the ones iv taken the time to fiure out, who knows where i need to be for any thing between those rangers... and im sure this is goin to vary for every rifle! just for that fact alone im goin to ditch it and get somthing with the normal MOA turrets
 
Years ago I bought a Bushnell Banner for my 10/22. It is 22lr scope 3-9x40 with a bullet drop compensator (model 71-3510). It actually works well. Obviously every brand of ammunition will have a different trajectory but it will get the rounds in the ball park and athen one simply adjusts the scope to the cartridge. I am pleased with it.
 
I use the cheap Sweet 17 on my CZ farmer, and to be honest I can't fault it much. Obviously it's not as sharp as a nicer scope, but for the money spent, you can't go too wrong. It's not pretty or of especially high quality, but it works.
 
The clarity of the one that I tried was very poor, not even the equal of other scopes in its price range (Bushnell, Tasco). The kicker was the poor repeatability of the adjustments. Once you finally got them figured out (as another poster mentioned, the numbers are not even close to reality) you have to be able to rely upon them to work the same way each time. They don't! If you can't use the BDC feature reliably, then there is no point in getting the Sweet 17 model. Any scope would serve just as well, and probably provide better optics as well.
