Visited a friend last night, and he showed me his dad's old 6.5X55 Norwegian Krag. Someone had borrowed it for a moose hunt, and ended up using it for a crutch on the way out of the bush. The barrel got plugged with mud, sand, and other junk off the forest floor. No problem, we'll take care of that.....

Believer or not, the guy tried to clean out the barrel with a drill bit welded to a long rod! He then proudly presented it back to my friend to give back to his father. :dancingbanana:

So, I am on the hunt for a Krag barrel.

^ Words fail ....

Thats a tough one Ted.
I searched for years, never did come across a N. Krag with better than poor/sewerpipe bore.
Have never seen a half decent barrel FS either.

A new tube would be pricey, what with the square threads and breach machining required.

Desecrate a noble old Krag ... how could he? f:P:2:

One man, one kit. That's my philosophy when it comes to guns so don't ask to borrow any.

If you lend it out, you have to consider it may not come back, it may come back junk, or it might come back clean and in better shape than when you lent it. If you can't deal with that, don't lend it out. There seems to be 2 types of people, those that treat borrowed goods as their own, and those that treat it like it's stolen.

This is somewhat different, you have "Bubba the Stupid" in the equation.

I like to help out people, it's in my nature, but most of the time if that means lending them something, it ends bad for me. Why, not sure, but it's been many years since I lent anyone my rifle, or my boat, or my tools, and if I had a quad or a motorcycle, you wouldn't have borrowed them either.

My good bud once asked me for a scope for his cousin, so they could go hunting. His was off at the factory getting fixed. I lent him a Leupold 6X, a few weeks later my bud comes to me with cash in hand and pays me for the scope. I looked at him, kinda puzzled. He said that it came back so beat up that I wouldn't have recognized it as being my scope.

He did the right thing, and it sounds like you are also. I hope that you find a replacement. Or just go buy your dad the rifle he always wanted and let him enjoy.

It's not my dad's rifle, but belongs to the father of friend of mine.

We have already contacted a gunsmith, and it looks like he will be putting a 7X57 barrel on the action. A Krag-Jorgensen will be a nice, unique, outfit in that caliber.

I considered letting a friend of mine use my hunting rifle for deer season this year, it's nothing special and he didn't ask... having read this thread, in hind sight, I'm glad I didn't.

Sheesh! f:P:

I've been chastised for not letting friends borrow my gear, although there are a select few who could have the keys to my cabinet 24/7 if they needed something. These are people who I trust and vice versa....if something got buggered up through no fault of their own, the unwritten rule is to be honest about it and return borrowed item in the same or better condition then when it left.

I usually have a couple of guns that I keep around just so that I can loan them out if needed. You'd think that would be the answer...BUT NOOOOO!

I've actually been verbally abused...by the borrower and others...because I was so "selfish" that I offered them an old beat-up Savage or Rem, rather than a Blaser or other valuable gun. "Duh...gee...I was kinda hopin' I could take out that there Weatherby!"

It's a painful lesson to learn.

Just can't wrap my head around this!!!! Just complete lack of brains!!!! Can't imagine what kind of mess he would make of his car if it didn't start!!! Makes me think of a Winston Churchill quote "the best argument against democracy is a 5 min conversation with the average voter".
