I just bought a SVT-40 and he who should remain nameless, BUBBA, ya, you know the guy, had the wise idea to paint her all black with glossy black paint, which is peeling like crazy, and he also had the receiver drilled and tapped for a cheap scope. The scope thing don't bother me too much but the awful paintjob just makes you cringe. Its downright criminal if you ask me, leave the history packed rifles alone and attack something else if you get some bright ideas, or better yet if you wanna go tactical, buy tactical. Thanks for letting me rant, it had to come out. Anyone else have a similar story to tell. Gotta go and drink some cold ones. Cheers.:cheers:
 
If I could figure out the pics thing I'd post 'em, but take my word for it, its awful. The above post was a good one, who in their right mind would tremclad a Winnie, gawd!!!Laugh2
 
I once ran into a vintage, near perfect Arisaka Type 38 Long Rifle.
The stock had been replaced for a synthetic one, that looked horrible, the barrel cut down and re crowned, drilled and tapped for scope, and when asked what happened to the wood, the answer was "I burned it when ice fishing, get's damn cold!" I nearly vomited on him!

Horrific!
 
I restored, albeit after lots of love and care, a cut down Gewehr 98 that had her bolt handle crudely bent down and a cheap dove tail sight put on the receiver by milling off a bit of it along with adding a cheaply brazed front sight blade on the cut down barrel.

She looks a hell of a lot better now in her full military trim and is the basis for my Gewehr 98 sniper clone but those early days of looking at her in her rusty, dirty and abused, sporter configuration...

Have one here right now, working on it for a friend. P.-'14. Barrel sawed back to 20 inches. Rear sight removed and thrown away. Dirty great lump of iron brazed to the receiver ring with a notch filed in it for a rear sight. Barrel cut at an angle. It will clean up into a functional sporter, but that's about it. I'll re-proof it before he gets it back, of course.

Or another. I have A.G. Parker s/n 0019. This is a factory-modded surplussed Lee-Metford Mark II with modded military wood, 23-inch Parker barrel and a gold front sight. Bubba actually drilled great huge holes into the LH receiver rail so he could mount a scope, screwed the job up completely. Poor old thing is in a million pieces right now, being slowly restored after 75 years in the North being kicked around.

There was a law back in the Middle Ages that if someone was just too stupid to be allowed to live any longer, it was okay to "fool-kill" him. Makes one wish for Ye Goode Olde Days.....

on the upside the 7.62x54r round is a great moose killer. If bubba didn't do good paint prep then the paint should come off pretty easily. You can plug the holes wit set screws or weld them up, I cant reccomend welding as the reciever may need to be re heat treated ( I cut metal not weld it so I don't know)
 
Theres a bubba'd svt at the longueuil gun show. They were adking 500$ for it. Needless to say that it stayed there for a while. I dont know what happened to it since i stopped going
 
Well, since you must have got it cheap (nice unmolested ones are $250), you can work on restoring it and not worry too much if it goes wrong. Still sad that there are idiots who feel the need to mangle historic objects though.
 
look at it this way-you can get a bubba'd milsurp cheap,and turn it into fine shooter.

I'm looking for a nice Husqvarna rolling block that was ''bubba'd'' about 80 years ago by heat treating the reciever and rebarrelling it to 8x58r,making it a ''modern'' sporter....and if somebody wants to turn their nose up at that-tell someone who cares...
