If you don't want to damage the original paint, soda blasting is the way to go. For a piece that small, it wouldn't cost much. Soda has the advantage of actually being able to strip layer by layer. The orange paint was probably some cheap hardware store paint and I can only assume the original paint is tougher. It all depends on if you want a totally new paint job or you want to maintain the original one.
