Bubba'd, Original or What ? - PU Scope on SKS

Hello Everyone

I stumbled across this video while researching PU scopes, and I have a few questions I'm hoping the more knowledgeable members can help with.

Don't bother with the review of the Firefield PU and go to 3:27 of the video. Take a good look at the mount -

I'm by no means a specialist on SKS rifles but from what I've read and seen, PU scopes were not factory mounted on SKSs by any army - correct? Based on the spike bayonet and the light wood stock, I'm assuming it is a Chinese SKS?? But back to the mount - Is this an aftermarket mount someone put on or stock military? The gross windage screw is an interesting feature I have not seen before on a PU base - does anyone know anything about this variant?

I have no interest in mounting a PU scope on an SKS, but I'm curious to know just what this thing is......

So SKS experts, what am I looking at?

There were Chinese commercial guns that were imported with or had PU mounts and scopes installed on them for the commercial market.

No military has ever fielded an SKS with a scope on it.

DMR SKS rifles were used in Yugoslavia during those wars. Also, Russian army experimented with SKS as a sniper, but it was not adopted.

Chinese made several sporting SKS rifles with scopes.

The DMR SKS in the Yugoslav wars were made by gunsmiths, for militants. The Russian prototypes never made it beyond early prototype development. Thus, as I said. No military has ever fielded an SKS with a scope on it.

Yes, and what you said is all true. It's just with the collecting information that is basically by observation only we get this weird telephone game effect. So, if we mention that they were used in the Yugoslav wars without full context it gets spread as misinformation and suddenly we have guys claiming to have or sell military SKS snipers.

EDIT: An original Yugoslav wars militant DMR SKS rifle would be highly desirable as a collectible, it's just a guerilla weapon rather than an official military weapon.

Yup, you're right. imo, I think many Yugo SKS DMR's in Canada are assembled "Fakes." The US is a different story, although there are alot of fakes too, I think they got a imported batch of several DMR's and EX DMR's. I think it was AIM, but I could be wrong.
 
There were some scoped SKS's that came into the US for commercial sale only, never issued. It was called the ranch or farm somethin.

The Yugo had one too. I built my own if you want to avoid the never ending search for the Chinese farmhand. This one is a Russian on a PU with a non PU scope mount.

I'm no expert however that PU side mount was not factory but rather a homemade job or gunsmith. Pre-installed by someone else.
 
OK, so the SKS in the video is a Chinese import with a vendor applied PU scope and mount - correct?

What about the PU mount with the screw adjust gross windage? Is it just a modern Chinese interpretation of the original or is it based on a Soviet designed improvement? A screw adjust gross windage seems to me to be a superior method of aligning the scope over shaving/shimming the mounting bracket.

Looks like a Chinese repro mount on that video with a reproduction optic as well. Like I said above this quote, I believe someone install the bracket in the past leaving the D&T holes from a previous set up. Could it have been a "Farmers Friend" package, unlikely cause of the spike bayonet and lug still intact.

Yes, the PU mount have an oversize screw. It's to tighten the whole mount as you can take it off easily, Ww2 style. Also the internals of that mount have a directional or windage adjusting mechanism. Improvement, unlikely as they are a direct modern Soviet copy however the Chinese PU 1" mount is slightly different so it could be an improved version, I don't know. A vendor told us to stay away from the aluminium mount copy. the Rancher and Farmers Helper SKS have a totally different mount.

I believe the PU mount system is rock solid.
