where I live i can only use shotgun, but its also heavy brush, therefore making the longest shot about 50 yards. slugs are the obvious choice, but i dont have a rifled barrel, and it open choke. what size of buckshot should i use? im leanig toward 00, but what are you opinions for #4 buck? btw, this is a 12 ga:shotgun:

I have never shot a deer with buckshot, just to clarify, but I would probably use a 3" 000 shell if I was going to try. 10 * .36" pellets seems like a better idea than most others. A little better idea than the 41 pellets in a 3" #4.

Slugs are the way to go. Get a box of rifled slugs (their for smooth bore barrels) buckshot makes a mess, and if it's not a bang flop good luck tracking (not a lot of blood from wounds). Thats just me , you do what you want.

Buckshot is better suited for burglers than buck.
I agree with the info posted above that slugs would be better. Buy a few different kinds and try em out.

I have never hit a deer with buck shot but i have shot many at paper at 50 yards and 25 yards and was quite unimpressed with the patterns i saw.

Happy hunting

I'd stick with slugs. Number 4 buck is great for things that go bump in the night but I wouldn't shoot a deer with it.

If you have to use buckshot go with 00 Buck, you will get a couple more pellets in the load for a little denser pattern.

Try slugs first, if you can hit your target go with them.

I have switched to slugs however when we did deer drives we all used buckshot and killed a pile of deer with it. Have to know your limitations with it. I've had a lot of those bangflop with buckshot.
