Was out scouting for Friday's muzzleloader hunt, and came across a nice mature buck bedded with three does. I thought pre-rut they were a little more solitary. They were mulies though. Anybody shed some light on this behaviour?

Even if I was hunting, I wouldn't have had a shot. There was no way to cleanly take any of them, because they were so close, a kill would have wounded a second one with a through shot, which would have been the case at the 40 yards I saw them at.

Thanks for any insight.

Very common this time of year for mule deer to start herding up. Don't be surprised if you see larger herds of does with a couple of bucks.

The big boys will most likely be by themselves for another two weeks. After the velvet drops they normally find an area they're comfortable with and start moving after the sun goes down and before it's back up.
