Buck/Birdshot in rifled slug barrel?

I have just made a deal on a Rem. 870 fully rifled slug barrel on the Parts and Bits forum, and I was wondering if any of you shotty gurus know if firing buck/birdshot through this damages it in any way (chewing out rifling).
I wouldn't expect great patterns if it is workable, but don't want to wreck the thing either.......... thanks in advance for advice.
 
If it is plated shot I woulnd't do it, if it is lead shoit, I don't see why not. Just remember that it is pointless because the rifling will spin the cup and you shot will disperse to the point of being useless beyond 10 feet.
 
Someone posted a range report last fall about testing this out for real - it was a great thread about a well executed test and proof in the pictures. An yes, it was bad. If I remember right he could not make buckshot hit a target at 10 yards.

Shot won't hurt anything, but the patterns will be doughnut-shaped to the point of uselessness.
 
As the answer has been given - I'm curious about what dutchhunter said about cleaning the lead out of the rifling.

I've got a rem rifled slug gun that i shoot regular all lead slugs out of. Someone mentioned that the barrel will lead up unless you shoot uber expensive brenneke slugs, but so far I've seen nothing. What's the story on this?

Oh - and I tried bird and buck in my slug gun a few times... don't waste the ammo.

That was me, it was a couple of years back, thanks, you remember right, and I can't find the post now, stupid search function, grumblemutter.

Short answer is don't bother, it won't work. I've since sold the rifled barrel.

Well since all my deer hunting for the last 16 years has been with lead slugs, I would say they feed you a line. I've never seen lead fowling after firing slugs. And I doubt there would be any lead left after firing shot either. But since I have a bird barrel that I use for hunting/trap, I've never tried firing birdshot in my slug barrels.

Edited: Just had a thought for the slugs, are they not sleeved inside the casing? Will have to look when I go home.
