Buck shots in Canada

Where I should be.
I'm having trouble finding them locally. Anyone know of a supplier here in Canada that might ship them. Is it worth it? Or am I best to just get the mold and cast them myself.

I'm trying my hand in 12 gauge reloading since 00 buck cost a 1$ a round. I bought the Lyman #5 book to get informed about this this venture. I got a friend with a MEC press. My main use for the ammunition is practice with 00 buck in my tactical shotgun and to have decent cache.

Your best bet is to reload them yourself. I just started doing this myself. I am using my MEC 8567 progressive and placing the ball in by hand. its slow but I am in no hurry. I'm getting good results with:
- Remington gunclub wad
-WAA12R wad
-10 balls of #00 buck
-800X powder
 
Buck shot isn't regularly loaded by most shooters. Doesn't get cast either. Shot is made by dropping molten lead through a screen. Not that it matters. Trying to cast it will make you crazy.
Your local gun shop can order it for you. Shipping costs will hurt if you order on-line.

Yup, really easy with a skiesunlimited mold, actually any mold other than a single mold will do more than enough for what the average person needs. Hardest part is finding soft lead, the stick on wheel weights are nearly pure lead. I know some people that use straight wheel weights but I have never tried them for buckshot. Put a little tin in there to help the surface tension if need be but usually you will have no problems making your own.

If you are already set up to pour your own Bob is your uncle. If you need to buy stuff then start simple, a pot, something to heat the pot with a ladle and the usuall PPE stuff. The cost in shipping alone would be horrendous for buckshot let alone the price of it. It has been a long time since I have seen buckshot in a store in any great quantity.

I use straight WW for 00 buck using skiesunlimited mold.

I read somewhere that 00 buckshot or any kind of shot for that matter, is better cast from hard alloy since the acceleration forces of firing will deform soft lead and will give erratic patterns.

Having said that, I still have to test fire my buckshot loads, hopefully within the next week.:(
 
Yep, it looks like casting my own might be the best route. Has anyone tried other alternatives like sling shot balls? I believe they com in .32 and .25 metal balls. I can at least find those easily at Canadian Tire.
 
I wouldn't use slingshot balls, they are steel and probably very hard and noncompressable. They could really mess up a barrel.
 
I use the Lee double cavity .312 round ball mould to cast my 00 buck. Two pellets at a time will drive you nuts at the start but once you get system going you can get a lot done.

My recipe is

9 pellets .312 cast from a 50/50 pure lead and WW 3 layers of 3 seated by hand.
Win AA Hull
cheap Western trap wads 15.00 for 500 with two undershot cards punched from pizza boxes
32.4 gr hs6 (bushing 141 with a Lee Load ALL)
overshot card and fold crimp

I have tested many rounds out of my 2 smooth bore guns. They shoot a little high at 25 yards and completely destroy water jugs. The recoil is fairly light and it is no problem to shoot all afternoon with no sore shoulder the next day when you start having fun it's hard to stop.

The mould drops 2 aprox 50gr round balls and takes very little to fill so as I said above, once you get on a roll you can cast a lot of pellets in a session.

WW alloy will work fine, save the pure for black powder casting. Had a .319 Lee 2 cav mold and recently bought the new 00 (.330") Lee 18 cav and its way faster. I used 9 pellets 3x3 layers for both with Lyman or Lee data, trap hulls, trap wads.

I've got a pair of moulds coming from Skiesunlimited: #4 buck and 00 buck.

I can't wait to try them out.
