After 30 years of long gun ownership, I'm venturing into the handgun world. I think a .22 semi-auto would be a fun first step for me and my teenage son to enjoy together. I've landed on the Browning Buckmark or the Ruger Mark series with target barrel. I will be buying used. Help me decide. Thanks :)

I've used a Buck Mark SS Camper and a Buck Mark Sporter ( that's the carbine version) for rimfire steel challenge for a while now. Very reliable and I highly recommend these guns.

I got my Browning Buckmark from Dante’s, and I couldn’t be happier. Definitely try both the Buckmark and Ruger, as gun fit will be the main factor when deciding between the two. I found the Buckmark fit my hand way better, and as a result I shot better with it. The Buckmark will also have the better trigger in stock form in comparison to the Ruger Mark. Where Ruger wins out is that they have way more available aftermarket parts that will turn it into a great shooter. I just couldn’t justify having to spend several hundred dollars more to make it shoot better than my stock buckmark.

I 'made do' with my High Standard Victor for 30 years as I was put off with the contortions of cleaning a Ruger rimfire autoloader.

I got a Mk4 a year a go and have not fired the Victor since.

It is accurate, smooth and well made.

Mine is stainless and I really like it.

Love my Buckmark.. . Just ordered a race kit from tandemkross, and grip adaptor from striplin customs,,, do the HEGGIS flip (on youtube ) and it cleans up the trigger real quick

I just got a Buckmark myself, the "tacticool" laser model - I really don't find disassembly overly difficult, fits in my Nanuk case, and is quite accurate. Would recommend.

I own a ruger mk1 so not really comparable with a Mk Iv and a browning buckmark stainless slabside urx. They are both top notch in the reliability department. Accuracy goes to the buckmark, trigger goes to the buckmark. They both have equal aftermarket support. To be honest it comes down to what fits you better. I personally prefer the buckmark

We often try out each others pistols at the range. Rugers have great well made pistols that do feel and shoot well. Browning has never been as popular (likely due to marketing), but as others have posted, in my hands, they have the edge over Ruger in accuracy and trigger; I also really like the balance of the Browning better. I have a High Standard, and I would not trade it for either. It's an older pistol with an amazing trigger, that has always been super accurate. It's not fancy, no adjustable sights; tapered sportsman barrel, and starting to look it's age. I have also had the good fortune to try the target version of the High Standard, and the heavier barrel does seem to tighten up my groups just a bit.

Those who have tried mine out agree on the trigger and the accuracy. These are only available used now, but nice ones do come up at a reasonable price from time to time.

A few who have "traded up" from their High Standards for newer, fancier and shinier guns, have often regretted sending their old HS down the road.

This is a picture of one exactly like mine, it has the same sights, the same grips, and the same electro-less nickle finish:

I'd like to see someone reproduce these with decent fit and finish..
