This 1948 M44 picked for me by Tradeex downed two bucks during the last two days. One was taken at 100 yards with a running shot. Both dropped right on spot. This gun is extremely accurate with original iron sight loaded with 174 gr Hornady Interlock. I can do 2 inch group in kneeling position with this gun. Honestly I think it's a bit over gunned for deer.:evil:During this hunt my friend's gun's scope crapped out, so we ended up sharing this M44. I took that running deer, and he took another buck with a Texas heart shot at 60 yards. Deer had no chance at all. No complaints!

Thanks Anthony!:D

The meat wasn't too bad actually. The bullet went out of the spine right under the lower jaw. I think my friend's M44 is on the way. :D

More then once my eye catches a come play with me glance from my M44 in the safe, and I have been seriously thinking of using it for my deer rifle this year in spite of the new Benelli rifle I got...which is almost too nice to take into our Island mud bogs. :D

And I loved the shooting performance I got out of the Sellier & bellot hunting ammo I found for the M44. :)

Besides which as I mentioned before the M44 has a handy fold out bear defence bayonet. :p

Considering their cost I'm of the opinion that mosins (91/30's, m44's, m38's) are some of the best all purpose large bore rifles out there. What other rifle can cost $100, take down deer and bear, and be cleaned with a vodka soaked rag by a vodka soaked (after shootings over) person?\

Oh, P.S.:needPics:

The trip wasn't planned ahead. Everything was put together at the last minute, and the wife had the camera out with my kid. Both we put cellphones and his camera in a ziplock before hiking in, but friend put the ziplock in my spare backpack by mistake. We had to pack the meat out by each carrying over 100 lbs of meat and stuffs for over half a day. The M44 is bit heavier, but when you saw a running buck drop like a sack of potato on the shot, you wouldn't feel the weight.

Here is the pic when we unloaded our packs and equipment. Kinda confusing when looking at those packs. :D

Congrats on the deer, the m44 is a much better choice. There is no such thing as over gunned, but there is such a thing as under gunned.

I can only partly agree on your opinion. The reason I was carrying this M44 was because I was hunting in grizz country. Well in this case I might have been well undergunned. The knockdown power from my M44 for sure looked very nice. But if I go hunting around Lower Mainland I'd rather carry my SKS. But anyway I think I'll hunt with this M44 only for a while.:D
