about an hour after dark this evening i was driving down a side road and noticed a buck as i drove by so i turned around for another look. ended up being 2, 4 pointers that looked like twins, a nice 8 point, and an unknown deer behind some trees.

sat there for a couple minutes watching them from about 12 yards away messin around in the ditch.

i thought bucks would be flying solo by now?

saw three flag bucks together this aft, as I was going from the battery to a gas compressor....
none were anything to right home about. Actually, right in the middle of one of the heavily shot out CWD areas.

It is not at all unusual to see bucks in groups before [and after] the rut. They seem to like to be in each other's company anytime they are not vying for the attention of some hot doe. Regards, Eagleye.

Not uncommon to see them together. It's still a little early I think.
Put a hot doe in the equation and the dominant buck would put a run on the others.

i know that bucks will be in groups for most of the year, but thought it would be too close to the rut for them to still be in groups.

how long before the rut will they start to fly solo?

I have seen groups of bucks and does together into Nov. In one case they were just hanging around together the day before thr rut kicked in. It was one of those years when the rut seemed to take off one day. On Sunday evveryone was fine with eachother but on Monday morning it seemed as if every buck had cut out a hot doe for his attention.

Most years the rut comes in more gradual. For a time in Oct the bucks will stay in groups and one can often see minor sparring matches which end with both bucks leaving the scene together.

With mulies it is very common to see groups of several deer all year and even more common for a large mature buck to be accompanied by a smaller immature one right into and through the rut.
