Bucks only in Manitoba for 2014

I'd be happy if they opened Charleswood to bow hunting - I could take deer from my living room window on a daily basis. (Charelswood is IN Winnipeg, for those of you who don't know).

As for the rest of Manitoba - it's pretty hit and miss. They've recorded a major decline in many areas - that doesn't mean NO deer, just a steep decline - and they want it to stabilize. My middle brother is an environmental consultant, and knows many of the people in the field, so to speak. It's not critical yet, but they want to see a rebound so it doesn't actually get to critical.

What would help is having some way to get the poachers under control. My oldest brother lives in Minnedosa, and sees guys taking deer, elk and moose by the truckload in his area. I own land by Riding Mountain, and can certainly attest to the over "hunting" in the area. I've not hunted my own land in three years because of the declines. When the fire in Riding Mountain happened a couple years back near Highway 19, it drove a lot of animals out of the park into the fields. Farmers and "hunters" went to town on them. There were dozens of dead deer, moose and elk left to rot in fields - shot just for the fun of it. It was sickening.

I hear your rant, but I question your "dozens of" especially moose & elk left to rot in fields! R U sure of what you say?

Perhaps not fields but definitely front yards and driveways. I've seen between one and five whitetails sitting rotting on multiple properties at separate times. All because they never got around to skinning and butchering them. I thought wasting of meat was a big no no in a certain culture....

Bucks only is a mistake...tried my best to convince them season needed to close with no luck. This fall does will be shot by the "brown its down" gang and be left to rot, the buck population will be further decimated and if we get another bad winter followed by the Province doing the right thing (on their usual schedule of 3 years too late) it will be 10 years before the deer hunting will be good again Province wide....All in all an epic fail by Manitoba Conservation and the MWF...

There are herds in SE MB and in the Red River Valley (herd of 200 there this spring).

If they won't allow limits by zone, I say shut it down completely. That way, all the deer shot were taken illegally and the "hunter's" can be fined.

I would be ok with that. Make more harsh sentences for violators as well. If there are no available licenses if anyone is caught there are absolutely no excuses.

Wrong, wrong and wrong. Could you three fellows please enlighten all of us how you think it's possible to manage a deer population when two of the main user groups (Metis and First nations) would not have had to abide by a closure? Are the above politically correct statements or do you guys really not know how it works?

I saw them with my own eyes. I own land up there, just outside the park. The fire forced the animals out during rutting season, and they started moving into the hay fields during the day. Guys would just drive up and down the roads shooting at anything that moved. They treated those animals like others treat gophers and prairie dogs. We couldn't take my brothers dogs out because they would keep getting into the carcasses. I'm sorry if you think I'm making that up. Not sure why I would. My point is just that stopping the responsible and law-abiding hunter from taking deer is only going to go so far in helping the populations recover.

If you think that there will ever be restrictions on those groups you are living in a dream world. The best anyone can do is claim that the deer populations are going the way of the moose and close it for EVERYONE. That was they can somewhat control what certain groups do.

I try to take a realistic approach of looking at it. Assume there are other groups (whether it's Metis, First Nations, old farts stuck in their poaching ways) that will never be completely controlled or play by the rules. This will always be the case. There are always people who ruin it for law abiding citizens and unless the government wants to commit political suicide nothing will change on that front. As much as we all hate it, we all have to deal with it. We can't just sit around, pout, and do nothing.

The First Nations issue has to be considered as a separate one. As for the Metis as farcical as their system is they do issue "tags" and set "seasons". Should trained biologists elect to close the season based on population concerns and the Metis did not follow suit it would be a PR problem for them and David Chartrand is all about his PR....As for the full status Natives I imagine they will carry on as they always do and just because they can still hunt does not mean we as hunters should refuse to do what is right by using spite instead of science as our motivation.

Bucks only is a political band-aid that will do nothing to help the population recover from numerous severe winters and heavy predation. MB Conservation had a chance to do the right thing and they elected to not...

There is no way on earth myself or my family will hunt deer this fall and that will be a first for us since the last time the season was closed in the mid 1970's. My youngest son is 12 and this would have been his first year for deer but I will take him to Wyoming for Antelope instead of wasting our time and money in a Province that is more concerned with politics and license revenue than correct management of our ungulate resource...

We'll this sucks, finally move back to Manitoba after 16 years and was looking forward to first deer season. Seems to plenty of bucks and doe's out where I've been I don't see what the problem is.

There is also an "alternative" that you can do with your son if you have an abundance of time. Sitting in a treestand with a camera instead of a gun can teach them how to be calm instead of getting buck fever. Or if you are into spot and stalk seeing how close you can get and get a picture before they get spooked is pretty fun as well. I've done this on occasions where I know I won't take an animal but want to test myself or teach someone some.

But that would only work if you have a bunch of extra time and from the looks of your signature I'm guessing you don't.
