hey guys i'm thinking about taking a buck with some 000 buck shot... in a shot only hunting zone on vancouver island... i'm thinking full choke is the best... any thought? should i go with full choke because it'll be tighter at further distances?
cheers

Full choke isn't always the best, and is often over-choke for larger diameter buckshot... It pays off to pattern with what you intend to use...I found than improved cylinder held 000 buck tighter than did full..

I have gone as far as 0 buck through a super full choke. The pattern was roughly the size of a volleyball at 50 yds.

8.5 inches @ 50yds? Must have done your test far closer than 50..Perhaps 30yds? That's being very generous!!

I always preferred #1 buck as It gave several more pellets per 2 3/4" shell and was still .30 Caliber. Also patterned better in my guns.Full or mod.Leveled my first deer as a kid @ 60 yards on the full run small WT buck........

I like your original idea of 000 buck. There is no replacement for displacment on big game. I have shot wild boars with 00 buck and did not get very good penetration. My first choice on deer would be 000 buck that is nickel plated for better penetration and bigger holes.

000 buck will barely fully penetrate a broadside deer @ 10 yards (most were resting on the far side hide) and generally patterns worse than 00. I'd go with 0 or 00 for pattern density personally.

Dont forget guys. Its basic math. One inch spread of shot for every yard of shot distance is a safe guide to not cripple game for the average shotgun. So keep it real.

00 Buck in full choke at reasonable distances should equal a dead deer if you do your part. Pattern it first to have an idea.

Despite what folks believe it is lethal stuff.

Try a slug. Just my opinion.

Can't be done here man. Shotgun zone is defined as "multiple projectile only" in BC. So a slug wouldn't be any different than a 338 lapua according to the law. Most people ignore that rule and run slugs but that's poaching.

However with both bucks I dropped in a shotgun zone last year was 3 inch 15 pellet 00. And the extra pellets were overkill. With a good shot the basic 3 inch shell will just dummy any of the local little guys we get. 000 is overkill. Oh forgot to mention that I did that with a modified choke.

I know soo many guys that think they can shoot deer with buckshot at 100 yrds !!.Sometimes I wish the stuff was band for deer hunting but that's just me.

Anyone ever shot a deer with buckshot? I've killed them anywhere from 20-60 yards all bang flops no tracking with a full choked win 1200 using 2 3/4" ammo. Pellets were in the hide on the off side semi-flattened.Worked for me.

It is so....Very lethal @ reasonable bow ranges, which is where it should be kept...

Seeing you can't ban the fellas with this way of thinking, getting rid of buckshot is a good idea IMO...In all reality, 40 yds is beginning to stretch the limits of buckshot...Beyond 50 is Hail Mary shooting!
