Buckshot and Slugs with Over Under

How bad is it to shoot rifled slugs and buckshot out of over unders with fixed and modified chokes? If I were to get a new shotgun, what barrel/chokes would be acceptable enough to shoot slugs and buckshot while still being good for clays and small game hunting? The older models im interested in getting generally have fixed chokes.

Buckshot will work through anything up to full, full might deform the shot a bit and effect the pattern. Foster and brenneke slugs will swage through a full choke, generally not recommended but will work in a pinch. Definitely do not send sabot or solids through any choke.
 
It's no problem assuming we are talking about standard slugs and not sabot slugs designed for rifles barrel shotguns. Typically improved cylinder or modified are recommended by ammo companies for slugs but they will work in any choke.
 
cut one of the slug rounds apart and insert the wad/slug into the breech end of the barrel and push it through the barrel with a wood dowel. if you have to pound it through the choke with a big hammer you might want to change your mind about shooting it. the barrel can take a bit of pressure but it isn't indestructible. also, expect a bit of variation between different brands of ammo.
 
For small game and clays I’d go with improved and modified chokes. Both of which are fine for buckshot and rifled slugs. I did it for years but spend some time at the range as it was not a long range setup. Under 50yds with the slug and definitely under 30 with buckshot
 
Challenger slugs are fine through a full choke, as is buckshot. However, your group sizing/pattern may suffer with the tight choke.

Be sure to test multiple shells/brands to see what shoots best out of your gun/each barrel.
 
I like mod choke for buckshot and imp cyl for slugs
I have shot slugs through mod chokes but got worse patters and noticeable higher recoil
That was using Rio slugs
 
FWIW and not exactly on topic, one of the best, if not THE best, reasons to own an OU shotgun is that it will be one of the very last firearm actions to be prohibited in whatever you want to call this nation and whatever you want to call its system of government. As far as I can tell, there is still a large number of people who own OUs for clay shooting and even bird hunting. Our overlords like Nathalie, Mark and Gary are going to have an extremely difficult time brainwashing even the gun haters into believing that these are firearms that are designed to kill people on a battlefield, soccer field or Main Street.

Also, OUs are pretty versatile when it comes to ammo. For a 12-ga, you can even buy barrel inserts that will allow you to shoot rifle caliber ammo from 22LR and magnum upwards. (I feel that single-shot break-action and bolt action rifles are also relatively safe from prohibition, but if there is a mass-killing by a person using a firearm with those actions, who can predict how long firearms with those actions are not going to be prohibited.)
 
Buckshot is generally safe in any choke, including full, because the pellets compress and pass through without stressing the barrel.
 
With tight bores like. 719 cylinder and ic work best for slugs. When using my a400s and 1301 I find improved mod and full will give me better groups when shooting challenger or breneke slugs. The barrels in those are over bored. As for buck shot my 1301 really liked extended ic with flight control buck the a400s do best with mod when using cheaper buckshot
