Buckshot for Coyote

I have patterned just about every load you can find in Wpg. I found the Federal copper plated 4 buck and a Patternmaster extended choke with my Rem 870 was the best.
good pattern to 50 yds.

Where did you come across that load? Ive been having trouble finding #4 buck of any kind in wpg.

Wholesale Sports had them earlier in the year. Like all ammo though, when I find some I like I buy lots. It doesn't go bad if stored properly.

I have a Carlson's "Dead Coyote" tube in a Benelli that shoots 2 3/4" 00 and 0000 Buck quite tight to 50 yards. I would say 8-10" group at that range.
8 or 10 inch group at 50 yards I have to see that to belive it .I have never seen that good off a pattern in 35 years of using buck shot and I have the dead coyote tube ,if I could get a group that good I would us nothing but buck shot for deer Dutch

I've had multiple coyote encounters with both of hornady's 12 gauge varmint rounds - their nickel plated BB with the flight control wad, and their #4 buckshot with the flight control wad. The #4 buckshot load gets my vote hands-down! Out of a cylinder bored gun (works best with their rear-braking wad) it patterns great out to about 40 yards, and has killed dead every coyote I've shot at with it. Not so much the BB load...:(

Cheers,

Brobee

Not all number 4 buckshot is equal.

I once picked up Winchester 2 3/4inch shotshells on sale in Thunder Bay.
The stuff patterned very poorly at 30 yards and every time I pulled the trigger on one, it emitted what looked like cut up paper for shot buffering material.
Added to this nonsense, it was extremely dirty and smelly. One could have mistaken it for BP shells!

My patterns are shot at a life size coyote target, 5"x7" vital zone and then a 12" circle centered at vital zone. At 50yds I get average 5 hits in 5"x7" and 10 hits overall in 10" circle with Patternmaster choke and Federal Premium 4 buck. Remington 870 26" barrel with a Shurshot stock and a TRS-25 red dot.

3" #4 buck with a full choke patterns good in my 12 gauge out to 60 yards, I have taken 2 yotes with my 20 gauge using a mod choke and #3 buck. Just pattern your gun, if you can get more than 5 pellets in a 10" circle your good to go

I use a 20 gauge, 3 inch with #3 buck as well. Very deadly on coyotes coming to the call. If they hang up a ways out the bottom barrel is a 222.

I got some of the horandy varmint express load and it wasn't patterning great at 50. Probably a 2 foot spread at least out of an IC. Some of it was off the cardboard I was shooting at. I can't seem to find 3" #4 anywhere. Maybe lead BB out of a patternmaster?

Lead BB is good to 35 yds maybe. Penetration becomes a factor. I was patterning lead BB and using 1/2" plywood for a backer and the penetration was debatable at 35yds. Heavy shot Dead coyote is suppose to be good, however expensive.

$60 per 10 is a bit steep. I guess I could try 3" 00 also. Not many pellets though.

If you could keep 3-4 in the vital area at whatever distance you are shooting consistently that yote will drop. Only takes 1-2 00 buck to kill. 15 pellets in a 3" shell is hard to get good pattern. I patterned Winchester Double X copper plated 00 buck and got decent pattern to 35yds with full and Patternmaster chokes.

i have used #4 buckshot but i like f size better more pellets per load that said coyotes are not that tough i have dropped them with #6 birdshot while hunting small game

The one and only one I tried with a shotgun sure was compared to what is being said here. I rolled one over twice with #2 magnum 3'' ammo at 20 yrds or so with the first shot and not more than 30 yrds with the second...it got up again and disappeared into the bull rushes never to be found.

Was your load steel or lead?
Steel # 2 for sure not as effective as lead # 2 on a coyote.

I did not get good patterns out of the hornady 23/4" no4 buck. That is out of 3 rem 870 barrels. Tried cyl, imp cyl, modified and xtra full. I don't have a full. The xtra full showed over choke donut pattern, they may shoot better with the full. Now I'm using rem 3" no4 buck with xtra full. All my barrels patterned high with buck and I had to drop a 1-4x scope I had around the house on to drop the poi down. I would consider my shotgun about a 40 yd coyote rig.
You'll have to try different loads with different chokes to see what you will get, so buy small quantities of ammo to get started and start patterning. Let us know what works for you.
