hi their im all for clean kills and being ethical so this might be a weird question. could i get close enough to a yote to succesfully use buckshot? im thinking of a new gun and i was thinking of a twelve gauge but my neighbor is having problems with coyotes and asked me to hunt their. should i go for the shot gun or maybe a 22-250 or .223 or .243??? thanx

I have heard of people round here that chase them down with ATV's and shoot them with shotguns.
Not very sporting in my opinion but it does work.
I have a 94 in 44 mag and killed one with it before but you need to get in close

A 44 mag would kill it if you could hit it, that is the only reason to be close. I think buckshot with a tight enough pattern, look at Patternmaster chokes, would be fine. I don't know what part of Ontario you are in but be aware of the caliber restrictions on small game hunting, check the regulations for your area before going out with the 357. If you have a small caliber centerfire rifle, ie 222, 22-250, 243 use that and you will be able to take them over 200 yards away. If you are around buildings or you feel using a high power in that area due to homes might be a problem load up with buckshot. If you get a 12 gauge, get one with interchangable chokes, then look into chokes meant to use buckshot, like the pattern master and pattern your gun. I used to shoot 3" 4 buckshot with my bolt mossy and on full choke would kill a yote to 50 yards no problem. Good luck.

Are you hunting for extermination or for fur and sport? I would NOT recommed the buckshot for the latter as it may tear up the coat pertty bad.

If you're just ridding the farm of nuissance pests though, buckshot is more than deadly enough at anything under 75 yards with the right choke.

My suggestion: How about a .410 slug? Not much chance of hitting anything in the background if you're close to homes. Also, plenty of stopping power and accurate enough under 125yds.

But then he might as well use a 357 or a 44

If you are hunting with hounds or in thick cover Buckshot is effective on Coyotes. 3 1/2 inch #4 buckshot can be deadly with a long taper choke out to about 80 yards.
Otherwise get a Varmint rifle... 44 or .357 and .410 slugs are not coyote medicine.

How about a Baikal .223/12 Gauge combo?

I am selling one, brand new with 3-9X40 bushnell scope. They sell for $750 but I will sell it for $650 Which is pretty good considering the taxes and scope.

Best of both worlds.

Illegal yet effective here, lot's of guys use snowmobiles as well.

thanx alot. im not chasing them down on a four wheeler i dont beilve in that.(just my opinion) im doing it for the hunt and my neighbors has been complain of calves being draged away. i dont have alot of funds right now so im gunna go with the shotty becasue versatility. i was looking at a browing bps for 350 used and its a 22x3x20gauge. i thought that with some buckshot or a smaller slug would be enough for most yotes and deer. thanx for the info !

20 guage is a fine choice mj. Especially if you end up shooting thru some bushes or cover as mentioned before.

I don't see why this is true though since a 44 holds pretty damn good energy past 100 yards and packs more than enough whallop to be considered deadly 'medicine'. Same goes for the .410 and 357 at shorter ranges.

The 44, 357 and 410 slug will punch a big hole, you should have no problem killing the yote within their acceptable range but if you want fur then you will have to learn to patch the holes. Pattern your gun for buckshot, if you are going to get the 20 gauge go with 3" for the extra pellets. The thought about plated shot, remember that the buckshot pellets should deform to transfer the most energy, if your gun patterns well with standard lead buckshot than use that. Simply put the softer lead exterior will deform more on impact than the nickel of copper plated shot buit if you can't get the pattern on target that does not matter. Again good luck, ####guns are great to start off with as you can hunt almost anything with a shotgun within acceptable ranges.

"...hunt their..." Hunt their what?
Buckshot isn't accurate enough for hunting anything and it'll rip the hide to shreds. Assuming you want the hides. Use a rifle with fmj's. Commercial fmj's not military ball. Hunting with milsurp ammo is illegal.

From what I've seen, you could totally miss or just wing a coyote sized critter with the larger buckshot at 25 yards. Why not use a heavy dose of lead BB's or even #2's.

Hunting varmin with milsurp ammo is illegal? But using comercial factory fmj is somehow different than military fmj?

I have used 12gage #4(2-3/4") and bbshot... and over those two i like the bbshot better. But with a 3" or 3-1/2" load you could stuff as many #4 pellets as there is bbshot in a 2-3/4"

I have shot about 5 coyotes with my finish mosin nagant m91(with handloads ofcoarse). And about 10 deer(got to love those free cronic wasting tags). I load hornday 150grain .312" bullet in lapua+norma brass.... wich is absolutly outstanding on deer and coyote(well it rips them to shreds). I even shot one coyote on the run at 150 yards.
