Buckshot,Whats it good for?

Honestly besides action shooting is there really a legitimate use for buckshot ? Its basicly useless at ranges over 20 yards and a deer hide I got from a friend litteraly had 00 buck deformed and imbedded in it.What do you guys use buckshot for? and am i missing something?
 
2 legged predators come to mind, but honestly, buck shot at close range is pretty lethal. The deer you saw may have been shot at a distance that exceeded the range of buckshot. If you are in a tree stand and there is a deer under you or close to the stand, buck shot is still very effective.

After seeing what buck will do to a coyote @ 40yds I will go out on a limb here and guess the deer hide you saw came from a deer shot by someone who is bad at judging distance.
 
When I carry a shotgun I have a couple of buckshot rounds in the sidesaddle for fox repellent. I don't want my dog to get tied up with a rabid fox, so if a fox is acting suspicious, and is close enough to be a concern I'll drop it with a load of 00.
 
Predator calling . If i'm calling towerlines or pipelines or across frozen ponds , basically open country i use a rifle but there isn't much open country around these parts of northwestern Ontario . Most of the places i call the maximum range is 50 to 60 yards and for that it's the full choke and buckshot . Typical shooting ranges are from 25 to 40 yards but i have went as far as 65 .
 
In some areas in B.C. , due to the proximity to population the Hunting regs say "shotgun with multiple projectiles" for hunting in those areas.. So for deer ,BUCKSHOT would be the choice.

True. Crossbow'd be a better choice :)
 
We use it blocking for coyotes and it is very effective. The longest shot was made by our 80 year old at a running coyote with a single barrel 12 gauge over 120 paces in the snow. With snow you can see where the shot went and very few coyotes get by within 100 yards. #4 buck works the best but will not shoot as far as 00 or 000 buck. We hunted coyotes 6 days a week with dogs in the winter months and we shot more with buck shot than with rifles.

This is why 3" 000 Buck was invented. :D

Also it does sound like the shooter miss judged the distance.

Wildlife regulations sometimes prohibit single projectile ammunition in a wildlife habitat. :(

#4 Buck isn't perfect but (for anything larger than birds) it's better than birdshot.
 
I've never been a fan of buckshot by any means - but that may change. I was recently on a course and had some 8 pellet HORNADY OO buck demonstrated and it was giving about a 1 1/2" (not a typo) patterns at 25 yards out of improved cyl - the other brands had spread to approx 2 ft at the same distance. I have yet to see Hornady on the shelf yet.

this is where you take a slug, pull it out. drop 3 #8 pellets in. put the slug back in. you now have a multiple projectile slug shot :D :D

x2. It's good for any animal under 500lbs at short range. Imagine getting shot 9 times simultaneously by roughly .38 spl. It's a really good manstopper for the most part but in hunting big game for a meal is probably not a good load. For predator control at short range or depending on choke used it is kick-A$$. Oh by the way 500lbs is what I pulled out of my head, it all depends on how you shoot and your fear factor:shotgun: :dancingbanana: :runaway: :runaway:
 
Buckshot is for Varmints.:mad:
Other than in select few Jurisdictions where it is illegal to use slugs, using buckshot for Big Game is not only stupid it is downright unethical! In Ontario there has been much talk (MNR) about making it illegal for Big-Game.:eek:
If you are close enough to kill a deer cleanly with buckshot ( under 25 yards ) then how hard is it to put a slug in the vitals? :confused:
Now we can hear from the "Lucky Pellet" shooters who will argue that Buckshot is the answer!:onCrack:
