Buckshot,Whats it good for?

in all my deer hunts I have seen too many blood trails from buck shot. Now a blood trail can be fun if you have to but a clean kill is best. So if any one ask tell them to use a slug. Even in heavy cover the slug works.
Been there done that.

P.S. Save the pellets for action shooting lol

Ive used this saying for about 15yrs,when talking about combat shotguns and the use of buck shot for 2 legged and small 4 legged targets.

2 rds of 00 buck at short range is like getting hit with a full mag from an uzi, so you may want to rethink your ideas on the use of a handgun v shotgun for homedefence.

Honestly besides action shooting is there really a legitimate use for buckshot ? Its basicly useless at ranges over 20 yards and a deer hide I got from a friend litteraly had 00 buck deformed and imbedded in it.What do you guys use buckshot for? and am i missing something?

Bear defence.

I have always thought of a 00 buck pellet as roughly equal to a single .32 ACP. When I factor velocity, weight and construction it make more sense than .38 and much more than 9mm. Hitting anything with 9 .32 (or 15:)) would stop most anything in NA I can think of short of grizzly.

One other use for buckshot is for use against bears in populated areas. A few years back a local fellow shot a polar bear off his deck after it tried to get in his house. We were in a truck going to work only a few yards away and I'm very glad he had shot and not slugs in that gun.

Anyway, the lesson stayed with me, shot should be loaded in the house gun for just such emergencies.

Buckshot is for Varmints.
Other than in select few Jurisdictions where it is illegal to use slugs, using buckshot for Big Game is not only stupid it is downright unethical! In Ontario there has been much talk (MNR) about making it illegal for Big-Game.
If you are close enough to kill a deer cleanly with buckshot ( under 25 yards ) then how hard is it to put a slug in the vitals?
Now we can hear from the "Lucky Pellet" shooters who will argue that Buckshot is the answer!:onCrack:

Years ago, I hunted with a fellow that only used buckshot, and he nailed a deer each and every year with it. I've only ever shot one deer with buckshot, and that was a large doe and I used a 3 inch load of #1 Buck. Range was about 22 yards, and she dropped so fast she bounced.

I wouldn't hesitate to use buckshot on deer AS LONG AS the range is under 30 yards, I have test patterned the load for my particular gun, and it is a broadside and not quartering away shot.

I've always wondered about the size of "SSG". Ive heard people talk about it but i've never come across it. Anyone care to enlighten me?

BUCKSHOT = GREAT BEARSTOPPER. I've personally used it. I load my tube with 2 12ga 00's then slugs. So when he's ten feet from me I have two 00's ready for him. Trust me it works. I work in the bush and no pistol would take the place of my 12 ga 3.5" benelli nova. It hits hard, BUT when mad angry people eating bear is trying to play tackle the surprised person you don't even feel the recoil and the 00 is good for when your ####### is doing the sideways quiver and you can't aim worth shiznit.
