Just wondering what the recommendations are for a budget 1911. I've owned three Norinco 1911 commanders in the last couple years and was wanting to try something different, nothing against them, they all functioned flawlessly for me and I learned a lot. I'm just looking for a change. Im leaning toward 5", maybe more of a mil-spec design. IAC, RIA, and SAM all seem to be in the running, just looking for options and advice. Thanks. Mike.

Direct short-term experience handling and shooting Iver Johnson and Rock Islands and both are good for the price but the Rock Islands really do seem very well built and I would probably go with Rock Island if I had to purchase a $600ish 1911, though I can't speak to their longevity. No experience with SAM but many people seem to have a lot of great things to say about them. My vote would be to go with Rock Island with confidence.

If you are considering RIA and SAM, and I can assume your budget is say $500-650 or so, I think many CGNers will recommend a used STI Spartan as well

Why not buy a nice 1911? I don't see the point of having a fleet of cheap ones.
Kinda like a car collector that collects Lada's.

Im just looking for a bargain 1911 that's above a Norc in fit and finish, if I had it my way I'd have an Ed Brown, but I'd better be able to marry it cause the wife would leave me lol.

I'm very pleased with my SAM Thunderbolt... little more than you wanted to spend, but if the other SAM models are as good you won't be displeased with it.

If I was considering a non Norc 1911 on a budget I'd go for a SAM or RIA.

Kicking it up a notch in price a STI Spartan or Remington R1.

So who sells the Ruger for $677?
Ruger $677...... Remington R1 $617 here in Montreal

Actually, Murdoc (Armacoat) has SR1911s listed $724. At that price point, I would still buy the SR1911 over any Asian made 1911 at any trim/custom level. Not that I am averse to Asian guns, btw.

I would actually pull the trigger on the Armacoat deal if I can only decide which of my toys I can live without, but none of them comes to mind.
