In while this thread may belong more so in the Hunting Section I am looking for accuracy :).

I am looking at spending around 700-800$ not including scope. The max distance that I'm looking at shooting is 400 yards.

I have been looking at a few rifles so far including
-Remington SPS tactical
-A base Savage or Stevens with a upgraded barrel
-Thompson Center Venture

And they all seem very capable of good grouping based on my reading so far.

I know this is a accuracy no-no but for no I am just looking at feeding it factory ammo  until I get set up for reloading :).

What advise would you give to someone in my situation and what rifle would you recommend ?.

Thank you for any helpful info :).

I was asking myself this exact same question 2 weeks ago. I had to decide whether to get the Steven's 200, the Savage 16, or the Axis in 223 and ultimately the Axis won out. This is simply because I was ok with a .75MOA gun (I handload) and I didn't want to modify anything at all. If you're looking to swap barrels and change out triggers etc, get the Steven's it's so customizable.

You do know that you don't have to pull the trigger any harder to get the bullets to fly 1000 yards?:p
Savage has a faster twist barrels of the 3 mentioned. For that reason alone I would go with a Savage, just in case you ever want to shoot heavy bullets at longer ranges.

I recommend a Savage 11 or Stevens 200. Spend good money on the scope and mount. Upgrade or modify the trigger, barrel and stock as you see fit and budget allows.

the SPS tac is a 1/9 same as the savage, Mine is liking the 70GR VLD

Do you think they would all handle 55gr ammo well ?.

I am looking at the Savages and they look great :).

Also the Stevens 200 looks like a great platform .

But also liking the SPS Tactical looks as if the stock flexes tho.

I hate the Savage accu stock its junk IMHO the sps stock is junk too! but HS stocks for Rem 700 come up used all the time

the 1/7 twist Savages are over 1000$

The stock will flex on a Stevens 200 too, but there are plenty of posts with advice on how to fix it.

Keep in mind with the Stevens 200, you won't get a scope mount. Try to find a Savage 11 in 223, it's pretty well the same thing, but you might be able to find a combo with a throw-away 3-9 scope and mounts for about the same price as a Stevens with no mounts or scope.

I picked up a used Stevens 200 in 223 with stock reinforced and a bedding job done for $325. I am waiting in an EGW 20 MOA mount for it. In the meantime, I'm getting dies and buying once fired brass and components for 223.

A 1-9 twist should handle a 55 grain bullet well and can also spin the heavier ones like the 69 and 75 grains.

I went with the Axis, just because I found one when I was looking for either the Steven or Axis in 223.

Used Savage Axis 300$
Used Savage 12VLP barrel 1:7 twist 175$
Stock I made myself
Trigger was tuned by previous owner
I installed my Vortex Crossfire on it 250$

I have yet to try it (got 300 Berger 80 VLD on the way) but I am confident it will work out great, I will report when I got time to go to the range

Here is the thread about it

I have a Savage 12FV .223 and a Savage 11 hunter in .223 with wood stock. Both are nine inch twist.
They are both very accurate with 60 and 68 grain projectiles. Great rifles for the price.

Cool build ! .

I have the rem sps tac and it's a real shooter. The stock does pretty much suck had to go at the barrel channel with some 80 grit to open it up a good 3/16" since the forends not very stiff. However after shooting a sub 1" group @ 280yds with a factory load and my rollies with 69gr.smk's to 40gr.bk's have been consistently averaging around .5 MOA that stock has really has kinda grown me. Still would like want a mac 5 or an h-s thou but times are tuff.

So witch platform would be the best to start a build on. Looks like the stevens 200 any store have .223 in stock noaw ?.

Thanks for all the helpful info so far guys :).
