Looking at buying a 44 mag revolver to have but don't want to spend the big bucks for a smith an Wesson and such. What are some other choices out there and there price? Longer than 5" barrel preferred.

New to te revolver territory so any insight is appreciated

Cheers

Best bet would be a Ruger Super Blackhawk. Look on EE and you can find them for around $500 ish.
Great guns and way stronger than S&W's

Not the money part about it I'm worried about it. I reload y dads 44 mag fr him so ammo isn't bad. I shOot my 45 Jericho mostly but feel like a 44 mag would be a nice addition

If you like shooting heavy stuff get a Ruger, If you can find a Taurus they're good revolvers and normally cheaper. Can be hard to find parts if you need them though.

I have a Redhawk and like it very much. Mine has a 5.5" barrel, current production offers this and a 7.5" barrel so they meet your requirement there. Mine is blued, they only make them stainless now.

I can see what's nicer about a S&W and why they sell for more, but the Ruger is in better in other ways and costs less - we each have to decide for ourselves which features we value more. S&W's look a bit nicer to most people, have a nicer trigger, usually an excellent finish. The Rugers are built to be more robust, and will stand up for longer to the heaviest loads. If you buy a new S&W you can just not put it through that and never worry about it. If you are buying used and aren't sure you can judge wear and abuse, the Ruger is a safer bet.

i also vote for ruger, i just bought a ruger super blackhawk bisly with a 7.5 inch barrel and a non fluted scroll marked cylinder, beautiful gun, and quite a few hundred less then a brand new smith and wesson

Taurus for new.....if you can find an old Llama Super Comanche for a good price they are a good buy.
Pretty much a s&w clone with a colt vent rib :)

I have a 5.5" Stainless Ruger Redhawk that I don't regret buying. Like others have said, the Rugers may not be as refined as S&W, but they are built like tanks.

I have done buisness with them before and it always go smooth. Im not realy recommending the Llama because i dont know anything about them but its an option. I would fully recommend spending the extra and getting a used smith 29.

not a deal at $500....should be $300-$350 max, I had one for years, definately not a $500 gun...

Charter Arms has a 44 5" for $499. I don't know too much about the brand though.

*edit: whoops. This is a 44SP*

.44spl is the predessor of the .44mag and can be shot in them just like .38spl and .357mag. Not a bad idea actually, all OP would need is brass, same dies/bullets can be used....brass would last forever, could shoot nice cheap cast lead accurately. Looks like a nice lightweight piece.

Anyone shooting any caliber that starts with a four after the decimal point is either VERY wealthy or is crazy if they do not reload. And if they reload then it's better to use the .44Mag brass but load down to .44Spl power if that's what they want. That way they don't get the fouling ring buildup from the short brass.

Since .44Mag is sort of a "big bang" thing to end up the day at the range before firing up the BBQ I think that a single action gun is fine. But if you either can't deal with that manner of loading or simply find that the traditional grip style doesn't suit you then by all means go for a Ruger Redhawk double action gun instead.

Hmmm choice now. The ruger is nice if I could find one in blued. But what about the Taurus? Who sells em and for what price. The raging bull looks badass. And yes pull that out at the range for a couple bangs before the BBQ is exactly what I had in mind

If you want a blued Redhawk be patient and check the EE frequently. Advertise WTB if you have the cash on hand. I think when they made them blued there did some with barrels longer than the current maximum, which is the 7.5" - I'm pretty sure someone offered me one with an 8" barrel when I was looking, but I was very set on 5.5", and eventually it came true.

To my mind the best option would then be a single action Ruger Super Blackhawk and a modest little reloading setup to go with it if you're not into reloading yet.

An SA revolver seems like a PITA to empty and reload. But with a little time and practice you'd be surprised at how fast this can be done.

And the SA SBH runs far less for cost than a DA revolver. AND you can get them blued and put on the nicest looking grips. Here's a pic of some zebrawood grips I made up a little while back. They are fatter around the neck to fit my big hands better. The originals let the gun rotate in my hand too much and slammed the rear of the trigger guard into the back of my fingers. With the new grips even hot full pressure loads are now fine to shoot. So little made such a big difference.
