Budget "AR-10" - Armalite / DPMS / RRA?

AR-10 Mag Discussion Articles

The ArmaLite website library contains a number of good articles on what I see now as, ArmaLite's proprietary modification and use of the original M14 mags. They even give you instructions on converting the mags yourself.

Below is a post I came across on another board that was submitted by and ArmaLite employee, which provided great detail and insight into the company's decision to use the M14 mag (as a design concept), and, comparison to the other two dominate choices (i.e., the Knight/DPMS mag and the FAL mag used by RRA): http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=827832

DPMS integral trigger guard?

Most of the DPMS LR-308 rifles come with an "integral" trigger guard that is solid and does not permit change to a winter-type guard. Has anyone been shooting these in really cold weather, are they suitable for use with winter gloves?

Deckard,
degreeszero has listed a forum that's quoted the article I read. I don't recall where I read it. It was during the time I was trying to pick between the DPMS and Armalite. I went with the DPMS (The Armalite came after and only because it was unique).

degreeszero,
It's the standard space in any AR rifle. Depends on how thick the gloves you're shooting are. That being said, shooting with gloves sucks. I've only had a few pairs that were ok. It also depends on how cold you want to go. I personally recommend going inside and shooting .22LR during cold winters. I've shot in -30 and it really wasn't much fun. Shortest range trip ever. Hands, feet and ears. Always the first to hurt. By the way I hate the cold.

I've used some thin glove type liners under one of those shooting mitts with the slit cut in them so as to allow one to slip a trigger finger through. You still get a decent feel for the trigger. Even if you don't, practicing with this "handicap" will make it so much easier to shoot when summer comes and you go back to using no gloves!
