Hey guys...I'm sure this has been asked before, but here goes. What would be a good idea for a first black rifle (maybe AR-15 style - looking for something somewhat traditional looking and lower budget)? Some guys I know are building theirs so they can go cheaper, but just looking for some input.

Oh, and preferably non-restricted if possible. Thanks!

Can you give us a number? cheaper has a different meaning to different people

calibre?

building it yourself is certainly not cheaper

Non restricted, cheap, and black rifle do not go well in hand unless you are willing to take a red rifle, and Vz's are no longer "cheap". The only thing applicable for you would be a Keltec Su 16 and those are not exactly awesome in terms of durability.

If you are willing to go restricted there are good AR options for reasonable prices.

Half decent AR-15 will run you $800+ on the EE, $1000+ new.
Anything decent non restricted will be $1800+ used and $2500+ new.

Shoot your friends black rifles while you save up enough to buy something decent or you'll just end up selling it for a loss to replace it with something better.

If all you can afford is $800-$1000 , or that is all your willing to spend, buy a SU 16,buy it new,so you have warranty. You may or may not need it.
I've had a coulple and they did everything my CC sa 15,XCR-L did.
They're light as #### and you can upgrade the stock and for end later, when you save a few bucks.
I know they get a bad rap, but if you got warranty, who cares.
I never had to use it.
The only diff between my XcR and SU16 was ,the XCR was a bit more accurate, much nicer looking and $2000 more :).

It'll go bang everytime, no matter what you feed it.

Oh ,that's for NR.
Irunguns has a few ar for about $800 CAD.

And as CR5 polnted out, you will take a loss if you decide to upgrade. I did .
I've had 2 SU16,2 xcr, 1 Jard48,a few AR . There all gone and I'm waiting on a MV.
WTF,might as well go all in...lol

Mini-14 not exactly a black rifle but a semi that shoots 223, there are a few stock upgrades that will give it the look you are looking for.

T97 is a nice little NR bullpup that you could get new for under $800 but if it was my money, I would get the Anderson AR for $699. More impressive stats than the s&w, colt, mossberg and ruger entry level AR IMO.

Like others have said, restricted vs non-restricted is the biggest factor here, cost wise. You can buy an el-cheapo Norinco or other bottom end AR brand new for your price range, but they're all restricted. For NR that visually somewhat resembles an AR-15, you're looking at a Robinson Arms XCR-L(Almost 3 grand new), a Bushmaster ACR (about $3400 new), or an ATRS Modern Varmint (About the same as an ACR). No cheap NR AR-15 looking options, unfortunetely.

You didn't specify what you want the gun chambered in; I think everyone (Myself included) assumed you want it in .223/5.56. If you wanted a pistol caliber gun however, the JR Carbine looks very similar to an AR (Uses many AR compatible parts), and it's around your price range. They come in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. Or the TNW Aero Survival rifle in 9mm is similar in price and appearance.

You also didn't specifically mention semi-auto... The Troy PAR is a pump action black rifle that resembles an AR.

Not AR looking, but in your budget I guess I would add my name to the Type 97 list. Or go 9mm and get a JR Carbine/TNW ASR, as others have mentioned.

In my mind, if you are looking for a first black rifle on a budget, I would likely say go the 9mm route. You can save a bit on ammo, and have a fairly reliable gun, at a reasonable price.

I was originally thinking .223, but I would definitely go 9mm. Pretty much anything center-fire would be fine with me. I've been shooting, hunting, and buying/selling guns most of my life, but know little to nothing about military style rifles. All this info will be a huge help. I just don't want to break the bank before I see how much I enjoy it.

How accurate are these JR carbines to 100 yards? Just wondering. The price is right, just not sure how they compare to Mini-14.
