i would like some opinions on whether to get a 783 24" heavy barrel , a savage 12 fv or i already have an extra 783 20 " barrel just buy a pre fit for it.

thanks

What do you want to do? I'm partial to the 783 and will likely get one soon. Mine will strictly be a range toy and I will probably get a few different barrels for it.

i am leaning towards the 783 as i already own three 2 in 308 and 1 in 223. think i may go 6.5 creed with this one and drop it in a boyds at-one stock looking at a vortex strikefire in 3-18 or diamondback tactical ffp 6-24. i want a budget prs gun/rangetoy

783 ahead of Savage.

I builded a budget bench rifle for one of my grandkid.

783 16.5 inch / muzzlebreak/ Knock off bipod / Swarzoski 5X25X52.
This rifle is a wicked shooting rifle with factory GMM 168 gr is MOA or better up to 450 yards ( range max distance ) all the time.

I give some credit to the quality scope.

With another scope YMMV.

My choice for a mag fed repeater

My choice for a single load, F class rig... older Savage SA/Stevens 200

Match barrel swaps will allow either platform to perform with the mega dollar rifles.

Figure out what your goals are and the action choice is obvious.... not a fan of what Savage is doing with the new gen actions but...

YMMV

Either will do. I feel the 12 FV is a better platform if you want to build. However, with that being said the 783 is a lower price point and has some pretty competitive offerings. Either way, Oryx makes a chassis for either which sells for 520$ bucks and is a huge upgrade on either! Play with both and see how they feel and go from there!

I gave one of the $450 Cabela's sale 12FV's in 6.5CM a go. Wanted to see what it would do stock...I have a 10HS in 308 that is really impressive with stock action and barrel.
Anyway...filled the butt with lead wheel weights and silicone caulking, bedded the action, stiffened the forend with a cut to length piece of steel thread all and epoxied it in, filled all the little forend spaces with epoxy putty... weighs about 15lbs now lol. Gave it a paint job.
So far I don't feel like it needs anything replaced, shoots very well and only my time and minimum dollars invested. The OEM heavy barrels shoot very good if you have a stable platform under it.

I have a 12FV that I put in an Oryx chassis and put a Vortex Strike Eagle 4-24x50 on top. It's a great shooter. I don't have any experience with the 783, but I don't think you would regret the 12FV.

Any experience with the newer 16.5” 783s heavy barrelled 308 or 6.5 yet? Or just no point with the shorty barrel?

Depends on what you want to do with it. Shorter barrels have their place for sure. Id shoot one of the 16.5" 308's for sure, I feel like the 6.5 Creedmoor needs something closer to 20" but I'm also really curious on how it performs...next year I should have enough money to experiment. It seems the AR world is having good luck with the 16" 6.5 Creedmoor. Rifle shooter has some good reads on 16" barrels in both calibers.

I have a shorty in 6.5. velocities are approx. 200fps lower than manufacturer and loading book numbers, some of the best groups I've shot are under an inch and I dont consider myself a very good shot.

Had the 783 (308 with the 16.5" barrel) at the range yesterday, working up a load for hunting using Sierra 165 hunting bullets. Best 4 shot group @100 could be covered by a dime so that makes it under 1/2". Last week, trying some Hornady 165 hunting bullets, just picked a mid load from a manual using 3031 and 3 shots into 3/4" @ 100. Using a 1-4 Leupold with a HEAVY reticle so both groups must have been lucky. I'm not that good on a bench but still......not bad for a cheap rifle.
