budget build (rem 783 heavy barrel or savage 12fv

Any experience with the newer 16.5” 783s heavy barrelled 308 or 6.5 yet? Or just no point with the shorty barrel?

Had my 16.5 inch 6.5 CM out today. Shot great, easily under 1 moa ( around .6 - .7 moa at 200 m) with cheep Federal 140 gr ammo. Unfortunately I have too much elevation it seems in my XTR rings. Lol. Going to have to change out the inserts and head out again for a go. 8 Mil high at 300 m , no more down elevation adjustment left in my scope.

going to try my 16.5 inch 783 in .223 this weekend. had it out in June and it would group loads it liked under an inch at 100 m (after I bedded the recoil lug and relieved the barrel channel). I've since replaced the factory stock with an mdt lss 2, and added a hera arms linear compensator.

Cool. Mine currently sits in a Boyds Pro Varmint stock and I had to open up the barrel channel on it as well. The lug seemed to be fairly tight already. Wednesday morning is my next trip to the range with -10 moa in my rings this time.

What's the purpose for a short bbl on a long range or target gun?

Seems to me like turning down free velocity.

And increasing volume. I think its mostly cosmetics but we'll probably get a story about carrying it in the bush, not knocking the short barrels what ever works for whoever, just not how id put together a target plinker. 21-24" for that, for a mountain shooter maybe 18-21"

My clients often ask me.... “Savage or Remmy??”

My answer is “YES!”

You see, both make good inexpensive great shooting rigs that one can build on. Examine your needs (blaster, zombie rig, LR shooter, LR clay bird blasting, PR or PRS?, Future needs, accessories, stocks, chassis systems, mounts, quality mounts, mounting screw holes and their sizes, ability to upgrade barrels, and so on and so forth.

Many considerations.... After all is said, done, thought about.... go and learn your platform by researching and eventually buying said platform. Get good at THAT platform. Learn how to tweak it and get better at this tweaking.

Then.... get out and shoot matches, many of them. Which ones? “YES...” Every damn one you can.

Hang around the great shooters, resource people, vendors, distributors... learn from them. Pick their brains. I have not met a vendor who was not willing to share their learning journey with me/you/any newbies.

So, jump in and have a tonne of fun!!

Cheers, Barney

Agreed, it was a good deal and an opportunity to try out the cartridge. If I am happy with the rifle and the 6.5 CM, the plan is to replace the short barrel with a 24 in heavy target barrel.

Amen to that!

I’m guessing the intended purpose of the short barrel was to have a manageable length after you added a suppressor:( I find my shorty 783 in .223 likes the 55gr bullets better than the heavies. Accuracy wise, almost as good as my custom .223, but not quite.

.667 MOA today with the 16.5 in barrel using cheap Federal 140 gr Non Typical ammo. Shot well out to 400m with no issues. Going to try some premium ammo and play with the trigger a bit. Was using a cheap bipod which needs to be replaced as well. Overall, very happy with the 783 so far. Will try to stretch it's legs a bit further and then decide whether I am sticking to the 6.5CM..

Got out last weekend with my 12FV in 6.5cm...they are on sale at Cabela's for $419 currently.
It really likes the Nosler 140gr custom competition pills, was ramming them almost through the same hole at 100m.
Now that I found a load it likes, I'll have to try it at some distance.

I see the Cabela's special, Savage 10T-SR rifles are back on sale for $649.99. Comes in .308, 6mm CM, .223, and 6.5CM. 24-26" threaded barrel.
