Well this project has been a long time coming. Finally after a couple years of hauling my Remington Sendero around from mountain to mountain during sheep season. Though almost every rifle manufacturer makes a great lightweight accurate hunting platform they also want an arm and a leg for it!
About a month ago I purchased a Remington 700 SPS in 300 Win Mag on sale for 499.00 at Cabelas. Though I would rather support local dealers this sale fit nicely into my "budget" criteria.
After reading some good reviews on Vortex optics I picked up a Viper HS 4-16x44 here in Edmonton at the Nature Valley Corner Store for $509.00. The clarity is great and I love the fine cross hair.
There are some great rings and bases our on the market today but I have never seen anything as strong and well build as the Alpha Hunter from NEAR Manufacturing. In the past I have cheaped out on mounts and suffered accuracy from it, not this time. The Alpha Hunter is a one piece CNC machined titanium alloy mount weighing in at 100 grams.
I was playing around with the idea of ordering a Bell and Carlson stock from rifle-accuracy.com but to stay true to my low budget theme decided to paint, re-pillar, and re-bed the SPS stock.
I hope to pick up my custom made aluminum pillars tonight and start the bedding process, its great to have a brother as a machinist!
This is my stock before I started the painting process.

And all taped up.
Fresh coat of paint.
Dry enough to put back together! I like it already.
Much more to come!
