Budget rifle build... over time... questions

Hey guys I am looking into getting g a 308 HB but I want to spend no more than $700 on it Initially. I was thinking a 700, a Weatherby vanguard 2, or some type of savage... to which I will change the trigger, add a magazine, then change the stock,and the barrel.... eventually.
I guess you could say I am looking for more of a project gun. How would you guys go about this? What would you start with? What would you change next? Give me all your opinions!
 
Looks like someone got that before me, I'm going to see what else is available. On that note what would you change first, second, third etc. Etc...
 
I think the best bang for your buck is to start by either changing out your trigger or get the stock one tuned if you know a good trigger man.

Then, as money permits, I would swap out the barrel before I did the stock. The barrel, next to the shooter, is the biggest factor in accuracy.

The third change would depend on your funds. I would prefer to have a great scope mounted on a good shooting rifle with a mediocre stock but I'm sure there are others who prefer good ergo's over good glass.

Thanks dusticles (great name by the way :p), and I value all imput.
I think I will go with the savage 10 tr, which comes with a decent barrel from what I have seen. But I can tune the trigger a bit, I have done some work with them. The stock is an acustock, but I do prefer my McMillan's (if I can find a decent price on one).

^^^ I have 2 Savages that I managed to get the accu-trigger down to about 2.1 lbs. Have to max out the full adjustment screw. I would prefer to get down lower that 2 but that's about where it can go.

The 10 TR is a good rifle to start with as you were saying your budget is about $700.

What I would do as well.
 
Rem 700 in 308. 26" tube on mine but I hear good things about the 20" as well.

First change the stock
Then bed it
Trigger is fine and can be tuned by yourself.

Action and stock barrel are plenty till you shoot it out (which will take a lot)
Make sure you have a good cheek riser to get proper weld/sight picture, the combs are low on stocks for some reason. Even foam and tape will do to get you up high enough.
*Must reload for all precision shooting otherwise its 2-1.5 moa best imo*
*Get good glass right off as well,I assume your budget doesn't include that. If it does your gonna have a tough row to hoe*
 
Another option would be a Tikka T3, very smooth action and great action for a build. I went that route. I picked up a Tikka T3 lite stainless steel unfired for 750$ shipped in the EE......can't beat that imo. :)

My 'budget rifle build' got out of hand real fast. You can scratch 'budget' now. lol!!
 
Buy a Tikka T3 Varmint, they shoot as well as rifles costing 3x as much, then upgrade as cash allows. Tikkas are very modular rifles and require no pro gunsmithing to change out to AICS bottom metal, tactical bolt knobs, metal shrouds ect... Throw it in a Cadex or MDT stock and you have a nice rig that requires no smithing. Triggers are excellent and adjustable, action is one of the smoothest on the market.
 
Or go mil surp, guyintoga. My two current projects are a p14 re barrelled for .308 that I picked up for $119. Beautiful platform to build an entry level Fclass gun with. And my 2nd project is a .308 Savage Axis 2 in stainless that I picked up, brand new for $250. It's getting the Boyds target stock. I should have ordered the stock before the prices went up from $89 to $139... Oh well, still good value.
 
There's a model 12 repeater action on the EE right now for a hair over $700. If you want to do it right the first time, that's the one you want.
