I want to change the scope on my bolt action rifle with the two piece Buehler scope mounts. The style is a little unusual and I don't want to scratch the bases by randomly unscrewing everything. The mounts are described as follows: looking forward on the RH side there is a large screw on the rear base. There is a similar large screw on the LH side of the rear mount. There is a small screw on the RH forward base. There are two small screws on the top of the split rings. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The large screw at the rear give a reasonably good windage adjustment (helps keep crosshairs in the center of your scope). They work in conjunction with each other - ie. back one off and tighten the other side to move one way or another. The front mount screw holds locks every thing in place.

To take this apart:
1. remove the back large screws.
2.remove the small front screw.
3. the scope and mounts can now be rotated 90 degrees horizontally at the front mount and lifted out.
4. small screws on rings can now be removed and the rings will split in half.

You'll need to check that your new scope will clear using your current rings. Buehller mounts tended to be very low profile and if you try to use something with a large front objective, it may not clear. It's tough (impossible?) to find taller rings if you need them.

Much better modern systems now but back 30 or 40 years ago they were the go to mount on custom guns and very solid and reliable.

Scope mounts

Thanks Ruger #1. I followed your advice and mounted a Leo 3x9x40 without any problems. There was more than enough clearance for the 40mm objective. I will develop a 338 load and be ready for Oryx in 2011 ( I finally drew a NM tag!)

I'm glad that everything worked out for you as you will find they are a super solid mount and will hold up to .338 with no problems.

Good luck on your Oryx - I'm going after one in 51 days in Namibia.
