Buffalo/Bison hunting in Alberta

The season was in January wasn't it ? I can't remember. I applied for it last year but never got anything.
I have a buddy who is from Fort V and works around rainbow lake and I guess there always along the roads.
Reminder starting 2014 draws will be online only so make a relm account

i have been lucky enough to go on a few bison hunts with some of the natives around here. they are tuff animals. the season is open a lot earlier for their tags and you can usually get lucky and find some close to a road or on solid ground that time of year. i have found winter to be a little more difficult to find them unless you are using a sled and you really want to dress for the weather that time of year. a bison hunt is also a great opportunity to take a wolf since they arent usually far from the heard of bison

Buddy of mine went with a few people about 4-5 years ago to hunt bison north of Fort McMurray. The used every means of transportation available to get where they needed to go; truck, boat, atv, foot. He hunted on a trap line with the owner who knew where the bison were, so he had no problem finding one to shoot. He told me it was a tough bugger to drop. It took 6 shots from a .30-06 and 3 shots from .308 to take it down. It took them 2 full days of work cutting the meat up and preparing it for transport out of the bush. It took them another day and a half to get home with all that meat. He said it was one of the most tiring weeks of his life. He was glad he did it, but now sure if he would do it again.

At what distances are typical shots taken at? If it's close range I would bring a 45-70 loaded with 420grain hardcast bullets. If the distances are further I might need something with longer legs.
