I tried the search function but couldn't find my answer. I'd like to try BB ammo (or any other +P) in my Remington R1 1911, the safety manual says not to shoot any +P and only shoot factory ammunition, confusing a bit... Has anyone tried them? What's the risk? I'm not talikng about shooting 100's of them but just a box or 2.

Spend 10 bucks and put in a heavier recoil spring if you're nervous. Regular 45acp will kill the paper or ring the metal plates just fine.

Most modern steel 1911 will be able to handle some +P. But like anything, the more frequent the use with more powerful ammo, the quicker key parts will fail and need to be replaced.

If you were to shoot a steadier diet of +p, you would want to make a few mods, namely a flat bottom firing pin stop (creates more inertia for the slide to overcome when the slide cycles), a stronger mainspring (works in conjunction with the pin stop), and maybe a stronger recoil spring.

Remington probably makes that statement in the manual because of warranty and liability issues.

A couple of boxes will not do any harm; just use a heavier recoil spring (18.5 lb instead of standard 16lb is probably fine). A lot of heavy loads will of course accelerate wear on your gun, but won't blow anything up. +P for .45 Auto is not that much hotter than standard; 23,000 psi versus 21,000 psi. The assumption here is that the Buffalo Bore loading does conform to the SAAMI pressure maximum.

The warning to shoot factory ammo only is sort of a standard practice from a liability standpoint. What it really means is that you are on your own if amy damage results from defective reloaded ammunition.

May the ask why you want to try +P in your 1911? To some of us, the warranty exclusion for +P is just lawyer advice to protect Remington, but it’s there for a reason.

I love 1911s for what they are....accurate, reliable and powerful. But I don’t think JMBrowning ever thought of the need for more powerful ammo for his design.

I may be wrong but +P is better used in a revolver, say a S&W 625.

Why the BB? For the fun of it. Why in my 1911? Because the other 2 gun I have are a Sig 226 TACOPS and a 1911 GSG. I'm on the market for a Glock and would try them in Glock but want to know just in case I don't go Glock...

Where do we get a heavier recoil spring? Does any site spounsor have them?

If it is properly set up, a modern steel 1911 can handle a steady diet of moderately more powerful ammo and intermittent heavy stuff, just fine. They wouldn't be making them in 10mm if this wasn't the case. True though that other platforms like the 625 and Glock are stronger.

Not much in the way of mods is required to shoot .45 Super or .460 Rowland - I doubt that moderate use of +P is likely to cause issues. I've shot thousands of rounds of 230 gr cast lead flat point at 930 fps through a few Govt Models and a Combat Commander without issue...
