Buffalo Classic rusting already, what can I do?

Hey guys.

So here is the scoop.

I bought this H&R Buffalo Classic in may. she is rusting on the receiver already even after good cleaning and consistent oiling. the Barrel is fine, looks brand new as it should. And I've only fired 15 shells out of the damn thing. The receiver has case hardening colour on it to give it that "old fashioned" look, but I didn't think it would get this old fashioned this quickly!!

I've talked to their Customer Service Reps and I can't get anywhere. they suggested i send it in, but if they find that its shooters fault I pay for shipping there and back, close to $100 they quoted me. they then suggested fine steel wool and oil..lots of it. After getting off the phone and being upset I call a gunsmith to see if I can get it re blued. Oh no.. can't because of the Case hardening colour, it will make the blueing turn out greyish or purple.

So, I'm at a loss, if I try the Steel wool and oil it only gets rid of the rust and won't protect it. the other possibility is if I buy the H&R Handi Rifle, and slap the buffalo barrel on the Handi Rifle Receiver. Get a gun smith to fit it on for me, so I don't have spacing issues.

Is there any other options for me? or any of the ones i've already been told sound better than the other?

Thanks for the imput, and the help ahead of time.

Danny.

Your using the wrong oil. In the past after duck hunting over salt water I've used a penny with 30w oil, fine steel wool and 30w oil. The trick is too not over do it. Oil - rub - wipeoff - check, re-apply oil - rub - wipeoff - check to see if its good enough. Some people have finger oils that will rust a firearm.
I use walmart 10 weight synthetic oil on most of my firearms. They only sell it now in a 4 liter jug the last time I looked for it.

This this great advice. I have seen this first hand (my son).

Best oil is the automotive oil lightly, just as described.

:D

Even Hopps oil? thats always what I use.

and what exactly is wal-mart 10 weight? I know synthetic oil just not the 10 weight.

Thanks for the advice

What oil are you using?

After you oil it DO NOT touch the metal with your fingers. Use your oily rag to place it back in the safe. If I touch a gun after I clean it with my bare hands guaranteed it will rust in short order, regardless of how much oil I slopped on it.

Consider where your safe is placed in your house. A nice moist basement is not the best place. Consider a safe dehumidifier or some desiccant in you safe.

the reason its rusting so bad on the case harding is because the action is heated in a oven soakin in carbon. thus the surface has a ton of carbon atoms exposes and it will be rather hard to pervent all mosture away with oil .

i say again

appply car wax and seal it

If you want the perfect, all round lube and protectant, use Jet Lube 12/34.
I use this stuff for electrical, auto, and guns especially.
I live in a salt air zone and my gun safes are vented, and a cleaning and wiping using this stuff
absolutely prevents rust and corrosion on any metal.
We use this stuff a lot in the shipyards and it works perfect.

You can clean the bore of your gun using other products and then push a patch
with a bit of 12/34 on it through it and quite often, the patch will pull some more
fouling out that was left behind. I generally use Wipe Out to remove copper fouling
from the bore, but always finish with a coating of 12/34 to seal the metal.

This protectant/lube will not harm stock finish and is useful for so many other
applications like spraying a bit on all electrical connections on vehicles and
directly into alterators, switches & trailer plugs. This stuff is perfect for
marine and places where they salt roads in winter to save your electricals.
I've used a pile of different lube/protectants over the years, and this is
the best stuff I've ever seen for protecting yer guns.

Acklands Grainger is where I get this great stuff, and it's about $14.oo a can
as shown, but they carry larger sizes as well.

Car wax cannot compete with this product... period. ;)

I would do the oil and steel wool trick, degrease it and try Birchwood Casey Barricade.

I have a couple of Norincos that always had a dirty, gritty, oily feeling to all the metal parts but a good sealing with Barricade has them nice and slick. It also protected the mag tube from further scratching on my Polytech 1897. Even after a few practice rounds and a Cowboy Action shoot, it has no new scratches and on a Chinese gun, that's saying something

After cleaning the barrel and action, a quick wipe with a lightly oiled (Hoppes #9) cloth is all they need.

I've seen what car wax can do with a penny, it cleans it right up really quick, with very little wax, but will this help to remove the rust that's on the gun? and how do I Seal it?

thanks again! helpful stuff.

i use Bore Butter on the exterior of all my guns, it keeps it from rusting and gives both the barrel and wood on my Buffalo Cassic a beautiful shine. btw i shoot black in mine so its only natural for me to use Bore Butter. I also find it helpful to put it away with the cloth and dont touch it with my hand til its dry. Anyways, works for me. skokie

im not sure what the reaction of car wax on a penny would be due to its copper and alloys.

i would lightly try scotch brite but you don't want to go very deep AT ALL if you... X

second thought i would only use a penitrating oil and rubb with a cloth. if you start removin carbonite from the metal you will have a shine gray spot in the middle of the case hardening.

clean as well as you can with the oil and a rag .

then apply the car wax. .

To clarify, 10w oil is what some farm tractors use for hydraulic oil. Some times I can only find 5w20 synthetic for my oiling needs. How did it clean up?
