Buffalo Hunt – Northern Territory Game Management

Are the donkeys and horses also being hunted as a cull hunt (to manage the herd) or are they trying to eliminate them as pests?

How about the scrub bulls...are those feral cattle, or some other species?

I don't know if I have another major exotic hunt left in me, but if I do this sounds like the one. In many ways, Australia is a more appealing destination to me than Africa.

Congrats...great hunt! Any chance you could also PM me with the details of the outfitter?

Yes, scrub cattle, donkeys and brumbies are pest species in the Northern Territory.

Sorry, I don't have details for the outfitter, but I did send you all the costs associated with the trip.

Great story, like the others I enjoy hearing of hunting in other places. Were you allowed to fill your freezer or did all the meat have to be donated?Do you eat the donkeys and horses as well?

Sounds like Austrailia has some serious problems with non native species.Would you be allowed to go pig hunting on crown land?Do you have crown land in Austrailia or is it all private?

Majority of the meat was given to the local indigenous population. IMO, buffalo steaks are up there with prime beef.

In some states and territorys hunting in National Parks, State Forests and Crown Land is permitted under licence. But the variances between the states and territories vary greatly from all to none!

The Outfitters greeted us with a freshly brewed coffee and proceeded to cook us a full breakfast on the BBQ. ...

Following breakfast we rested for two hours, ...

Wow. Australia has never made my list of places to visit, but that breakfast has me thinking again.

I had to look up brumbies. I understand if it has to be done, but I wouldn't care to shoot horses or donkeys myself. I'm not up on Australian fauna in general but I know there are real problems with some introduced species. Are those buffalo native or are they also imports gone wild?

Water Buffalo were introduced early in the 19th century to the northern Australia from the Dutch East Indies as a food source and a beast of burden. Many escaped, thrived and became feral, causing significant environmental damage to the wetlands.

Consequently the Buffalo have developed a different appearance and temperament from the Indonesian Buffalo from which they descend. Buffalo mainly reside in freshwater marshes and billabongs, and their territory range can be quite extensive during the wet season (Oct-Apr). The Buffalo's only natural predator is the native sal####er crocodile; which grow up to 7m!
