Buffalo Target Shooters Alberta members?

Hey amigo - What is the purpose of your query? I'm a BTSA member, and I'm happy to talk about the facilities and events, but I might not care to get involved in one of the ongoing "debates". Or, maybe I would want to get involved. :) What's on your mind?

How convenient. I was looking to start a thread on the btsa.

So, I'm intending on join sometime this month, read through the faqs but it didn't answer one question. It says we have to have a member vouch for us to get keys. My question is, how do I get in to meet people and use the range, if I don't have keys to get in?

It seems to me like you'd get keys as a member, but maybe I'm missing something. Would a member care to fill me in?

Sure thing, I'm happy to. Please note that I am not a spokesperson, I am simply a rank-and-file member, so I could be not up-to-date or simply wrong.

In my understanding, new members are expected to come to club events (typically Monday night IPSC/IDPA practice) in order to learn about the facility and demonstrate proficiency. I think it's usually May before that starts up, as it usually takes quite a while for the snowpack to recede out there. I think they start offering range orientations around then as well, which is also a requirement. Until you are a keyholder, you can use the range during club events or in the company of a keyholding member.

That's probably not what you wanted to hear. But, it's definitely worth the wait in my opinion. There are very few options for outdoor ranges that permit restricted firearms around Calgary.

You can always email the membership coordinator to ask about other possibilities. Good luck, and I hope to see you out there!

Im just looking around for an outdoor range to shoot at (already a member at Rosebud) but would like to shoot comp handguns and AR`s so need some info on the facilities available to members ie club house and shooting rests etc.

You will be good for the comp handguns, AR comps.... not so much  Shooting your AR there on your own time is okay though!

Actually I'm ok with this. I've been looking at ipsc and the monday night events sounded like a nice stress free way to learn and get off the couch.

Ah, I see. I assume you're already familiar with the information that is available on the club website: w ww.btsa.ca/

As articcathonda said, comps are focused on handgun use. Rifle use is permitted on your own time.

There is no clubhouse at present. There are plans for one to be built, and I'd guess they will start on it this summer (heck, maybe even finish it!). If any other members have attended the AGM and can speak to this, please chime in!

There are some target stands that general members have access to, and usually some handgun-only steel b-zone plates left out, but the interesting (and expensive) props and stuff are kept locked up for organized event use (accessed during the Monday night league, etc.). No shooting rests present on the rifle range as of the last time I was out there (unless a wobbly table counts!). Think of it as a blank canvas ;) Honestly, the open air and the big space to work with make it a really great facility.

If you have any specific questions, stralia, you are welcome to PM me. I think the club would definitely benefit from more active members!

I just joined in November and am planning on going to the meeting this week. Have only really shot PPC, but will be going out to Monday nights, etc. to get active in the club.

Since there is already a BTSA thread up thought I would reply here instead of starting a new one. Cant get any form of reply from the club via their email and renewals are not being dealt with. Is there something going on that I don't know about? Also since there isn't a shred of contact info to actually speak to anyone if there is a person "in the know" please PM me as I would really like to know if I should be going else where or if there is truly just a mistake in processing apps that is taking place. Three friends are members and only one renewal was accepted. Rest have gotten nothing back and EMT's were not accepted. Beautiful place and was having a lot of fun so would be a shame for it to unravel.

There was a handover in the position of the people dealing with the EMTs etc. Not a hit the ground running kind of hand off. Anyways, I had an EMT expire back in January with the process as well. After finding this out, I sent a cheque in the mail. It was accepted that week and I got my application ASAP. With over 600 member, growing pains are evident and with it being volunteer run replies are as fast as they can be. I know this doesn't help much, but may give you some context.

*Disclaimer- I am not a contact person or a board executive. Just a shooter and not a very good one at that!

Thanks for the reply. I will try sending a cheque in the mail. I'm still pretty concerned given the time since the renewal and a lack of a reply.

Speaking of BTSA, I'm looking to attend holster night. I'm not a member, and have no IPSC experience. Do I need my black badge before attending?

Once it starts up, likely in May, come on out. Gate may be locked just wait for one if us with a key. Just come in with a safe open mind. It is pretty relaxed. If you don't know a protocol just ask. Lots of nice guys to help you out. I shot all last year without a BB course (finally getting around to doing one here in a couple weeks) and that was fine. Folks might get you to do a little bit from low ready to introduce you slowly. Just an easier way for all of us to get to know each other. Safety and having fun is all Mondays nights is about... and turning money into noise!
