I was driving beside the Trent river this afternoon when I noticed what I thought were some seagulls on the river. Taking a better look I noticed that these "seagulls" were diving under the water in groups.

I pulled the car over to the side of the road to take a closer look and discovered that they were indeed bufflehead ducks, about 15-20 of them. They were only about 25 meters out and were playing and diving.

In the years that I have lived here I have never seen any buffleheads on the Trent river here. There are plenty around north of here (bagged 13 of them this past season) but, have never seen them this far into April.

It was a pretty cool site to see, buffleheads diving, 2 mallards swimming, a white swan and 1 Canada goose just hanging out.

No pics, didn't have a camera with me.

And last night, had the new boat out and was just enjoying a lazy paddle down this little river when around the bend I came across a small group of mallards playing. Got to within 30 feet of them before they noticed me and flew away. Nature sure is beautiful in the spring.

Have shot lots of buffies on the Bay of Q over the years.

If u wanna see waterfowl right now go to Presquile Park. Cans should be in.

Lots of birds showing up in Sask. now too. Took the dog for a walk this a.m. and saw specks, mallards, pintails, canadas, and tons of snows. This aft. when I got home saw some cranes too. Decided to take the dog for a walk, took the shotgun too. Pass shot two spring snows for supper. Gotta love the conservation hunt.

They're usually one of the first waterfowl to reappear around the Kawarthas and among the first to head further north. They seem to follow the ice out sequence..

Bufflehead & Goldeneye (Whistlers) both. I've hunted both on the Great Lakes, Trent-Severn system and through the Kawarthas. Scaup and Ringnecks both seem to migrate south just a little earlier and return a little later than do the "black & whites".

I've seen several buffs and goldeneyes this spring. Presquille is a beautiful spot this time of year with the binos. I try to head down there once every couple weeks.
