Bug repellant?

the old "army : stuff was 95% DEET, not 71- the stuff that was issued in 'nam and would eat right through plastics- I still have a couple of bottles- and the stuff made by MUSKOL - not the sissy stuff they have now, since that stupid woman doused her kid with the stuff and got brain damage

I can't believe nobody suggested Avon skin so soft . It works as good as the 98% deet stuff and none of the side effects

PS I've used the 98% deet stuff and it works good but it melts plastic - gear shift, gun stocks etc .
It can't be good for us

We tried skin so soft in Labrador seemed to work some what. But then you cannot believe how bad the flies are up there. shore fishing was an adventure hunting it was usually too cold for flies.

You need the new product, Avon sells it, skin so soft with LCARIDIN. Also called Picaridin. It is suppose to be as effective as deet but does not feel like deet or destroy plastic, etc. We got some off of the mother in law who sells Avon. It seemed to work fine and I tolerated it much better than OFF. Can't say the bugs were that bad this year so can't say for sure.

It was ft mcmurray muskeg where I thought it was awesome , but the bug hoards liked my stinky buddy to , maybe he helped

I used to work in the bush and the problem is that regardless of what I sprayed on exposed skin, it sweated off in seconds. After that I just got used to them. ALL of them.

There are dry sprays now... I have a couple cans of it & can honestly say I prefer the dry spray over the oily feel of the old types.

That being said, I'll use what is at hand! Friggen hate mosquitos, black flies, deer flies, noseeums!

Cheers
Jay

Yep , that's what i've been using for a couple of years . I don't like that oily greasy feeling either .

My favorite is Australian 80% Deet Bushman. It is more comfortable than most , doesn't stink as much and you don't sweat through it. Most of the time 40% is more than enough. I had a single tube of 80% that I took to Mozambique, and we ran the whole camp on it. They were some kind of excited to find out that I had it, as it was well known for effectiveness but seldom seen. In a malaria area that's high praise.

If DEET ain't for you, then a mixture of Dettol and lemon juice in a windex spray bottle works even on tsetse flies. However I still have a couple bottles of military grade DEET which I use for really bad times. Moderately heavy clothing done up well and DEET under the bill of your cap and on the back of your neck works well. Thermacells do NOT work for blackflies, we found this out the hard way. I have also found running fast in large circles and flapping your arms works quite well but is tiring after a while and is not too conducive to still hunting and stalking.

Gum Spirits of Turpentine. Not the petroleum distillate stuff... The stuff they make from boiled pine needles. As a side note, that stuff works great as a disinfectant if you cut yourself. You can buy it at Home Despot...

Try the great outdoors lotion. It comes in a white bottle with green writing, google it. Works really well and doesn't feel too oily. Doesn't smell bad.

80% Muskol used to be easily acquired, and had little odor, but I don't know if they even make the stuff any more; I haven't seen any in a store for years. Usually a 70 K breeze is good bug repellant. If the bugs are particularly bad in your area, a bug jacket is the answer.
