Build FINISHED: Tactical Single-shot Shorty 12ga 'Baghdad Lockpick'

Finally got this thing to the range today! Put a few rounds of birdshot through it and a couple 00 buck to test function and then switched to slugs to sight in the red dot...

Not gonna lie...the slugs were absolutely brutal. I am no stranger to slugs....I have shot more slugs out of shotguns than I have birdshot. Sometimes 25+ in a range day. It's fun to launch a huge ball of lead downrange. I had a Ricol shorty OU that was about the same weight and had lots of fun hitting a plate with slugs out of that thing. I'm not small or alergic to recoil.

I shot three 2 3/4" slugs out of the lockpick before I decided it wasn't worth lasting injury...no joke.

When I saw the final pictures I have to say the enidine buffer popped into my imagination..... :)

A better recoil pad and maybe a stuby fore grip upfront to spread the load would sure help.

Sounds like a good day !! I don't doubt those things hurt.

Nothing like shooting a full box of slugs.

Get any pattern on the buckshot ?

What 12 gauge round would be best as a lock pick ?

I was using Federal Flite-Control buckshot which patterns extremely tightly out of cylinder bore. I didn't measure or record anything, but about 5" at 20y.

There are specialized breeching rounds that use a metal powder (in a pouch I think). Absent that, I do wonder how the smallest birdshot available would work. Can't say I plan to do much testing in this area...

I wish MFT made softer pads for the Minimalist stock. I thought about the Mesa Tactical hydraulic buffer tube...but cost and weight. I think I will just have to stock up on low recoil slugs the next time I see them.

Pulling the trigger guard back is how you open the action. I've cut and reformed the trigger guard so that the stock adapter can retain the trigger guard and allow it to move back and forth. The stock adapter trigger area also had to be shaped for this and to provide better access to the trigger itself. I also had to tap the grip hole in the stock adapter for a larger screw since there was no longer a place for the included nut.

Here it is mocked up with another stock I have. Probably keeping the Hogue grip. This is where I'm at currently and still lots of work to do....

You need this , if you were going to stay with the magpul stock , ht tps://limbsaver.com/products/magpul-stock-recoil-pad , it works very nicely , the rubber is kind of tacky though , if that puts you off .

Have you thought of taking a magpul stock like you have and cutting off the bottom angled piece? It would look really similar to the MFT one currently on it and you would have some recoil pad options, getting the snot beat out of you with slugs does t make you want to shoot it much I’d imagine. I’ve been sore for a good week after a day shooting my Enfield and a couple boxes of slugs and 00 buck, it sucked.

Yeah I know that feeling. I haven't mustered up the balls to try the 3" federal slugs in my single shot yet. I would have by now if they didn't close the place I used to go shooting in the bush, but I don't want to make an ass of myself and accidentally drop the gun at the range lol

This is actually a lot of fun to shoot. I've been shooting it every time I go to the range just for fun and I love the reaction it gets. Typically, "What the #### is that?"

I just noticed my forend is starting to slide off the barrel nut. It's just smooth aluminum clamped over the smooth steel barrel nut. Any suggestions for how to fix? I was going rough up both pieces with sandpaper (I might have already done this...can't remember), and I was thinking some sort of liquid adhesive or something between the contact surfaces. Must be relatively easy to undo. Loctite?

I'd D&T a spot for a set screw in the forend, with a slight indent on the barrel nut. Aluminum is easy to D&T, and for the indent in the steel, you just need a fraction of a mil worth of indent so the set screw has something to grab - easy enough to mill with a drill press at VERY low speed... We're talking barely scoring it.

Loctite the set screw and scree it in TIGHT. If a compression fit is almost holding it now, then a single set screw will most likely be all you need.

If you find the barrel nut breaks loose of the JB weld you could drill and tap a set screw or two through it and grind a small dimple into the barrel for them to sit in, hopefully the JB holds up to the recoil.

Great minds think alike grelmar ;)
