My boys are just little tykes (One is nearly 3 and the other just turned 1yr), but they are already little rednecks, and love visits to my trophy/gun room every chance I'll take'em (grin).
I needed a truck rifle a while back, so decided to kill 2 birds with one stone and picked up a used Rem M7 SS in 260 Rem (sooner would have had a 7-08 Rem though)and scoped it with a 4x Matte Leupold w/talley LW rings. It was actually chosen with the kids in mind (scope with a large FOV and eyebox/eyerelief).
My plans are to find a youth stock and fit it to them once the time comes, and then keep the larger stock for when they grow.
That rifle will be the community beater rifle for behind my truck seat, the boyz, and when mamma wants to shoot a swamp donkey someday!
I want a rifle that can (and it will) get beat and scritched and scratched as they learn the ropes... without the stress of a dinged up Gaillard bbl and $600 wildcat stock.
My plans are to buy them their own "customs", likely their 16th Birthdays..... in a full "man size" package..... in you guessed it.... the 280 Ackley Improved.
Longwinded way of suggesting a svelte factory rifle cut to his size as "training wheels" before you drop the big coin on a custom rig.
Chances are it will mean just as much to him, and get you two in the field sooner (6month wait typically to get a rifle built)... with less worry about his $2200 custom (I was a kid once.... clumsy little buggers by nature)!
I could think of nothing better than a Rem 700 LSS 7-08 mtn rifle cut to his size or a Rem M7 SS cut down.
Good on ya for getting him afield,
