Just a fun hypothetical thread to help get through the last of the Winter/Covid and other World issues thread.

That and I actually have the donor action and barrel that could do this, but would like to hear from others and their thought process on this.

Your building a mid-long range (350-450yrd) based on a Rem 700 SA, mostly as a backup rig, but will see some limited range duty as well. Keeping to the specs and requirements below, what, how and why would you go that route, factoring in reloading supplies (or lack thereof) also?

- .308 Bolt face
- 24" barrel up to .850dia
- SS of CF Wrapped
- Twist Rate
- 150gr - 168gr range (typical premium hunting projectiles or ELD-X or VLDs if the arguement is valid)
- 8-1/2lbs approx all in

What say the 'Nutters out there?

-Your Rem donor action
-22" IBI CF remage nut install, 10 twist
-MDT HNT-26 chassis
That'll still get you near or below the 8-1/2 lb mark with the proper optic.

I would also do a Remage swap, 8.5-twist CF chambered in .284 Winchester and finished at 22". Bedded into a Grayboe stock for light weight and reasonable cost. Triggertech, Talleys, and pretty much any optic with an upper mag of 10x or more for 450 yards. At the finished weight it should be a mild shooter with great downrange performance and accuracy potential.

7mm-08, 8 twist, chopped sendero profile to 18" would be my choice but if you must stick to 24" you need a sporter or cf light sendero contour to get near that weight. Used krg bravo on the EE today under 350 shipped; buy 3-5 mags wherever you can find them. 160AB for hunting and any literally any 7mm you can get your hands on otherwise for range work. 7.62 projectiles and factory loaded 308 are much more readily available and likely suits the intent for your backup, I can assume. You could have this built next week for a little more than a grand if you spend wisely on a prefit.

What barrel do you have on standby currently?

I would say the 7mm-08, but the projectiles are a bit harder to find for choices. The most available retail, from what I have seen in the last 2 months is the .30 projectiles. Lots of weight and style choice, so I would say as a back up, go that route.

A short 18"-20" barrel will get you out to 4-500 yards no problems, and cut some weight with carbon, but add cost. Easy to stay under 8 1/2 lbs, with right stock choice.

You will not make weight with that bbl contour. A std factory 700 sporter contour is a better choice.

Here is a 24" sporter contour in 6CM in a Grayboe Outlander with 23oz Sightron. It weighs a smidge over 8.5lbs as shown.

Agreed, anything 6.5 or 7mm is either Match stuff or in the 160+ grain range if you can source it. There does seem to be better selection on .308 in the 150-165gr ranges if you dont mind Hornady BTSPs or NOS BTs. I had been considering 7-08 or 284W around the 140-150gr weights to work with COAL and SA I have.

The up-to .850 dia was just to factor in those CF barrels If I went that route. I think I mic'd the #3 barrel at .630 @ 24" , so I'm probably going to end up utlizing that #3 profile 10 twist Shilen in .308 I have, as component wise it's getting too difficult to source the 7mm/.284W stuff to justify a complete redirect on caliber/barrel configuration.

Btw, I'm liking how that build of yours turned out. Nicely done.
