I'm just wondering what people want in a precision rifle, from different rifles/companies, to put all those best parts people want into one rifle. To see what would make the ultimate precision rifle

I am fortunate enough to be able to afford any one rifle I really want. My choice:

Accuracy International rifle with Schmidt & Bender scope. Next year it will get a heavy palma barrel from Insite Arms - Done.

I think J996 is on the right track - prefit barrels I think will become a very big thing in the near future. The reduced down time and being able to log online and just order a barrel is very handy. Whether they be quick change like AI/DTA or barrel nut style.

I think I already have mine. Last piece of the puzzle is a titanium Crux Archangel suppressor, which I'm waiting for the ATF to approve.

  • Rem 783.... I mean Defiance Deviant action with 20 moa rail
  • Hawkhill Marksman Contour 26" bbl (next bbl will be a fast twist 24" MTU) - chambered by Insite Arms
  • JAE Chassis with side rails (and soon to be ARCA rail)
  • Bix 'n Andy 2 stage TacSport trigger
  • Khales k624i with SKMR3 reticle
  • Silencerco Radius for hunting/critter shooting
  • Atlas bipod
  • Insite Arms Heathen brake

Well, I'm a lefty, so it's a world of compromises, but if we're talking a "dream rifle"...

60 degree bolt lift, so three lugs, pre-fit barrel compatible, but with the threaded section of the action extended, for more/longer thread engagement and a more solid connection.

Integrated (one piece) picatinny rail (the machinists will sigh at that one I'm sure)

Titanium action, though with its tendency to gall like aluminum, and for bolts not to slide so well, it would be neat to see the bolt made of copper beryllium or some other alloy that would slide better.

A stock with an aluminum bedding block that acts as part of a skeleton to support carbon fibre or composite shell with a layout similar to the thumbhole manners stock or a GRS sporter but closer to the weight of a wildcat composites stock.

Magazine options that would take a 5 round rotary similar to the steyr model M, so the mag doesn't protrude and is nice to carry, I like the bolt handle on the steyr and sauer as well.

Carbon fibre barrel in a heavy varmint contour, and a gain twist rifling

A-tacs FG camo dip on the stock, cause it doesn't have whites or blacks that stick out and seems to be the best all round scheme for the bush around here IMO

Actually I like the rear lugs to give a shorter bolt throw, move the trigger and magazine slightly forwards for a shorter OAL in comparison to a forward lug, but the precision shooting crowd seem to be wary of it for accuracy, just me current preference

I built mine last year, defiance deviant action, benchmark mtu barrel, Calvin elite 2 stage trigger, surgeon bottom metal, mcmillan a5 stock with custom camo pattern. And a tangent theta sitting in apa rings IMG_0059.JPG

Lots to choose from out there ... But if we are dreaming ...

I would really like to see more right bolt / left eject actions. You can run the bolt as per usual but you never have to break your cheek weld or have to feel around to see if rounds are feeding or if you have an empty mag.

It would also be neat to see mor rifle like the Q "Fix" where the action and stock are one piece, like an AR etc. I think lots of material and weight could be saved.

What would be just as fun would be a manufacturer that allowed the customer to tweak stock designs then print them on a 3D printer. Log on to a website, design what you want around a proprietary aluminum mini chassis, press print.

I too am fortunate and this year Insite built me a 6xc using: Surgeon 591, Surgeon bottom metal, Timney trigger, Hawk Hills barrel and McMillan A5.

I'm in the queue for another of their masterpieces but using a Manners T4A.

Sadly that Thorviking guy took the last of the 784's

I'm currently in the process of getting Insite to build me a rifle as well. 6.5 Creedmoor, Surgeon 591, Surgeon Bottom metal, Manners T5A Elite, Proof or Hardy CF Barrel, Vortex AMG scope.

Correction 783's....

I just received pics of my completed "dream" rifle that I ordered.

PGWDTI Coyote - .260 Rem with Folding stock in two tone flat black/Grey, with 4 ten round mags, LRA bipod, and hard case.

Since about ten years putting my dream rifles together. Even though the dream keeps growing I am getting closer.
What I would like to try is one of these newer carbon wrapped barrels ~ 22" in maybe 7x64 / 280rem. Atlasworx bottom metal. T3 action, AS.H three pos. safety. Bribe my son into making me a very light tactical carbon stock possibly at or under 800 grams including the adjustable cheek raiser. I will bed and paint it. Put my favourite 3-20x50 Ultra short PMII on top, I know they are heavy but ultra reliable, I just love using it. Not sure about mounts yet, Spuhr is good but too heavy. In the end the rifle should have the COG on the line of the bore like most of my rifles, I believe it makes a hunting rifle shoot more consistently.

Does you son work in carbon

sorry for the late reply, hunting all last weekend and on business trip this week.
Yes we both do, have a small family company making carbon stocks. Fantastic that we "must" experiment and find limits. Of course we must test well which means plenty vermin shooting and deer hunting. Also an excuse to test rifles/scopes.
