Im looking to build my own F class rifle. So far I am pretty interested in a liljha Barrel in 7mm STW.

Does anyone have any info on a good competition actions and trigger assembly?

I have a stock in mind already to be custom built. The Barrel is 30" long with a #6 or #7 contoured barrel.

Is there any advantage going from say a 1 and a half inch diameter barrel to a 2" diameter barrel?

Anything else I forgot throw in your 2 cents just leave the calibre selection out of it please.:runaway:

Well a 2 inch dia 30 inch straight barrel will weigh 26 lbs. A 1 1/2 inch barrel will be in the 14.5 lbs range. How much weight do you want hanging off the action:confused: You still have to carry it to the line.:p
For an action on a full custom F Class rifle you will need something with a long enough port for your cartridge to eject a live round, without pulling the bolt out of the rifle.
You might want to look at Stolle or Hall actions or maybe a Barnard to name a few. I think the loading port on a Millennium or RPA action would be too short. These are just some of the things to think about when selecting your cartridge.

The sky is the limit. If you want a custom action like a Nesika, Panda or BAT, they are superb actions and you can mate them to any of the best competition triggers like Jewell. Surgeon makes a superb action with components compatible with Remington for customizing or repairing, they are also excellent (I have nesika/jewel combo on an F class rig in 6BR) but I also like trued-up remington XP-100 actions for a fraction of the cost. Savage is now selling actions and they look excellent for about the $600 mark.

As requested, I'll leave my thoughts on calibre out of it.

If you are going to bed the action, I'd go for the narrower barrel. If you are going to use a barrel block, the heavier barrel would be fine. Consider fluting to cut down on weight and maybe aid cooling.

Obtuned. Please tell me more about your rifle.. How did you come to select the componets as you did..

Whats the pros and cons to bedding Vrs Block?

weight and caliber restrictions

I would check with your local Provincial Rifle Association about the caliber/weight restrictions before you start building. Here in BC we must not exceed 22 lbs (rifle and rest if permanetly attached) and 8mm and below and no magnums. I use 30" 1.25" diameter barrels on remington actions, both of my F-class rifles weigh in @ 21.25(6 br) and 20.5 lbs(284 win). I have a 338 Lapua that has a 30"x 1.37" with a 5" brake that just the barrel action with sleeve weighs 15 lbs. I am looking to build this rifle up to 30+lbs when finished. This rifle doesn't meet any of the DCRA rules but it is just for fun anyhow. Like I said I would double check the local rules before laying out the coin, it just might save you some tears.

Attend a match and see what is being used and being used successfully. Go to the DCRA website and read the rifle specifications rules. Try to acquire some kind of rudimentary knowledge of cartridges, ballistics, and rifles.
Once you have some basic knowledge on what might be a useful "F" class rifle you will be able to ask intelligent questions and make sense of the answers. Regards, Bill.

Well thanks Bill,

I read the DCRA rules and I did find the rule about 8mm and below however in the F(O) class I did not find anything about not being allowed to use "Improved" Calibers. There is howerver a nice graph of the muzzle velocity Vs Ballastic coefficient. Which will help. If I am wrong dont hesitate to correct me.

I have all my componets now picked out. Thanks for your time.

Spydr,
Please do tell. There is a thread on the World F Class Championships in the precision shooting forum. The question was posed about building a rifle starting with nothing. Although you may not be thinking World Championship what would you build, starting from scratch?

Well this is what I am starting with:
A 30" lilja barrel in 6.5-284
a Neiska action with picatinny rail and thick heavy pinned 3/8" in place recoil lug. Jewell Trigger. Full action Bedding. Mcmillan "New F Class" stock, custom painted.

Bottom Metal will be HS Precision I just not sure yet if I want a repeater or a single shot.

Be aware and fair warning I have never competed. I plan on my first in 2008. So i am by far not a professional by any stretch of the imagination.

Old George Farquarson, "Farky" to his friends and founder of the F-Class, wanted a way to keep old guys like himself in the game when they couldn't compete with younger and stronger men in the regular DCRA game. He'd been in a car accident and the surgeons reset his shoulder at a slight angle. He couldn't snuggle in behind a rifle butt the same as before.

The limit of his imagination was a very conventional rifle on a bipod or bags, and with a good telescope. He never expected to win anything. When rule-readers read between the lines, they started showing up with prone benchrest rifles that need a gun carriage for transportation.

In defence of Farky's intent, TR(O) was written in as a way for nonbenchresters to hold, aim and squeeze a conventional target rifle which happens to have a scope. There may be other subsidary classes now to separate the equipment fanatics from the more traditional prone shooters.

The cartridge limitations are there because most PRAs use military classification ranges and have to respect all their rules. The standard safety template is for 5.56 and 7.62, not the latest exotic. Don't try to challenge the template with something that exceeds those performances. 6.5-284 may or may not be legal on many military ranges because of its down-range ballistics. And, don't try to argue with the PRAs; only a few provinces own their own ranges where they can adjust the templat.

What wins matches? Trigger time. Build a GOOD rifle and shoot it in all conditions. Then build a BETTER rifle and try to win with it in all conditions.

Hey Spydr

If you looking to shoot in official F class matches there would be a question as to whether or not the 7 STW would conform. Sierra post the below BC rate of their 175 Match king at .608.
.284 dia. (7mm) 175 gr. HPBT .284 175 .608 @ 2100 fps and above

If i recall correctly the STW can shoot 175 in excess of the 3145 max allowable under the DCRA rules. You might run into issues with the rules committee.
If you want to shoot the 7's you may want to look into one of these three alternatives
7mm WSM (Alan Warner has had limited success)
7mm RSAUM (Jim Murphy has won a few US matches with this one)
284 (The South African team won the worlds shooting it)

Actions
Nesika bay action work well (look for ones with the Borden bump).
Stolle Panda is used a lot and can use an Anschutz trigger the others cannot.
Barnard’s are typically used for Palma matches but have found success in F class
Bat actions are a high quality action
Hall actions are in the same category sold action
Gaulin (Cdn) These guys make a great action as well.
Remington actions are used by most people entering the game and have won their fair share of matches.

If you haven’t ordered the McMillan stock hold off until you check out Ian Robertson’s (Cdn) Stocks he builds two of the best models currently available the Speedy and the Master Class. (he is a board member) If you go to a match you will see the top competitors use these models. Both rid the bags better then the McMillan (less bounce)

For reviews you might try and get a hold of Kodiak about the McMillan and Jkajfes about Ian Stock’s Speedy Model.

Ok i noticed you switch to the 6.5-284 after i wrote this.... the 6.5 is a proven winner.

Thanks for the tip Trevor. Great post. Yes I did switch to 6.5, after doing some research. I will look into the other stocks.

Outstanding. You will have a great 1000 yard capable gun; don't forget optics to match your Cadillac gun!

There is Nothing wrong with a Rem700 action, as far as barrel go, thicker doesn't mean more acurate, how ever it does give you more vibration dampning, 6.5X284 is a good start, 7mm is also very good, specially the 162 grain amax or the other 7mm match bullet that sierra had..., knowing a compatent gunsmith that doesn't overcharge is the hard part, you should thinking about buying a rem700pss in 7mm remmag, you will save youself a load of money, it had the 1in10twist which will handle the 162grain amax hornady , it give ove .610 BC which by had an edge over the 6.5 bullet... take the time and do some research, it you money...
