I want to have build done for LR shooting, I use a T3 .308 now and it;s great but want to try something new.
I was leaning toward a .284 or .270 any one have feed back for me. ?
Thanks Ron
If you plan to shoot in competitions both calibers will put you into F Open class. I do not believe there are as many match bullets in .277. Other things to consider would be barrel life and are you will to rebarrel every year if you go with a barrel burner?
You didn't say what you were using it for except for long range - which is somewhat subjective depending on what you deem that to be. You didn't mention formal competition of "F-Class" so that's purely speculation. If you're looking for something new for the sake of something new then that's cool too.
Re-barrel to .284 Winchester and have at it. Good selection of match bullets and you can buy high quality Lapua brass and neck up. Barrel life won't be as good as your .308 Win. though.
A 7mm/08 would be nice as well and will likely be see better barrel life over the .284 Winchester. By how much is anyone's guess but I'd suspect it would be significant.
If the .308 has been great so far that's a good thing. Have you explored all your options regarding high BC bullets like the 155gr. Lapua's or possibly Berger bullets? They might be good to try before you pony up the coin for a re-barrel.
I'm not looking to compete only with myself. The 7 mm may be the way to go.
I want to do a build so it's a 1 off and it's mine to play with.
There's nothing more relaxing tham a day at the range,
Thanks Ron
