I'm looking to build two AR-15s as cheaply as possible. I've done a bit of searching, and I keep seeing Palmetto State Armory being mentioned. They do have some nice deals on rifle kits and stripped lowers, but the price goes up pretty quick once I look at importing them. Is there some place here in Canada that does something similar? Am I better off picking up parts piecemeal when I see them on sale?

No saving unless you buy used parts or wait for super duper ultra magnum power eagle plus 2 deals. If cheap is all you are looking for Norinco will fit your bill.

Are you sure there's no savings? It seems like buying all the parts separately and slapping them together is cheaper than buying a fully assembled rifle.

Wrong. Price it out peice by peice and you'll see that buying an entry level AR will be hundreds less.

Yes I've assembled AR's. Lots of em.

Theres a dpms on the EE for $600 Atm.

You can successfully build a cheaper rifle and also build an expensive blinged out firearm to. It's how much you are or how little you plan on spending.

Not when you need to buy from different vendors, cost of shipping parts quickly eats up a build budget not too mention if you don't allready know from experience what you like you'll end up selling lots of parts only to try something else. Took me awhile before I figured out what I like in a ar.

Lets put it this way.
A decent upper will run about $250.
Same for a barrel.
Add tax and shipping and you're already at $600, same as a lightly used ar, or a new Norinco.

Start using American parts and it will go well over a grand by the time you're done.
The only reason to build one is because you want to choose your parts.

Building a decent AR is more than just buying the cheapest parts you can find and slapping them together, which probably isn't cheaper than buying an entry level gun anyway. You can buy a Norc with a chrome lined barrel for $600 - a decent barrel is a good deal at $200, throw in a BCG, barrel hardware and an upper - you've spent your $600 and you still haven't got a gun.

It can be done. IF:

You buy Chinese and NEA parts.
You buy used parts.
You spend months on the EE looking for said parts.
Or in TV's case, you find a complete upper with BCG for $250 was it? Pretty rare that something like that happens.
Also prices on everything are crap with the dollar.

Again, US made AR on the EE for $600, a lot nicer than NEA and Norinco in my opinion.

Maybe one for him, one for the missus?

Pretty well, yup. I also figure it'll be easier on the wallet if get something cheap, and then build what I really want as I figure out what that is.

I saw your blog entry, TV, and I don't even want fancy Magpul crap. I think the real barrier right now is the low dollar... Time to go hunting. I guess.
