Building a 1000+m target rifle out of an old N04 mk1.

Just do it. The firing points are chock full of guys benched shoulder-to-shoulder with their high tech furriner fixins - but where is our heritage? Get a poor abused and neglected Long Branch and make it a labour of love. Then make those other guys sweat through their Gucci ear defenders. Watch them wrap their space toys around the nearest white pine after the match! Go for it.

I don't know why but I love the look of my old Enfield. I think it would look sooo mean with a super long xtra heavy barrel and a monster scope with a sunshade. Besides I really want to beat this pompous ass I know in Provincial competition. He shoots a 260 rem.
It's your money, but don't count on beating the other guy. Like Ganderite said, when it comes to match handloaded ammo the solid custom actions are the clear winner unless you block bed the barrel and float the action. There's a thought.

Sorry, but sentimental values and emotions do not win matches.

Someone else might be willing to spend cash on a Musgrave or a Sportco M44 (or a trued Remington 700) and they would be a better investment IMO.

If you're going to put something like a Krieger barrel on it for serious shooting, why put it on a marginal action when there's better available?

Something to think about........

Rem700 would be a fine choice, it hasn't fail me yet, in fact a tune rem700 sps heavy berrel would make an excellent choice, best bank for the buck!

He is an alcaholic. I could probably come close to tying his score with the old bird the way she is. The only reason he won last year is the top 3 shooters didnt enter the comp.

this!

I think its obvious that modern precison actions are superior to an action from a 70 year old battle rifle. That said why must everything be logical/practical? After all we're mostly guys here "because we can" is usualy all the reason we need...

Personaly I love the enfield action. Its silky smooth, lightning fast, and its dripping with cosmol, I mean history!
I would love to do a Enfield sleeper build one day. match bbl, massive trigger job, modify the sear/firing pin to reduce lock time, glass bed the stock. Why couldnt you make it consistently sub moa?
Long range is way more about reading conditions than hardware right?
It'd be pretty sweet to see a guy with an "old enfield" competing along side someone with a surgeon.

If a guy already has three of four precision builds, why not get creative?
If a guy is looking for the shortest/simplest road to competing at 1K, then stick with the new stuff. Its popular for a reason!

There is an Australian gentleman who has just produced a book and an E Book on accurizing Lee Enfields (No1 and No4) - he has interviewed a large number of old time target gunsmiths in an attempt to preserve the knowledge that they had regarding the LE and accuracy. I have a Parker Service Rifle (B) package gun which shoots beautifully, the issue here on the Island is getting a long enough range - 300 doesn't cut it for these old girls. If I was looking to shoot 1,000m I might be looking for a No1, myself but the No4 is very capable of reaching out to 1,000 with irons - should be easier using a scope. Those L42's didn't leave service until the early 1990's, and they were rebuilt No4T rifles left over from WW2 service. It doesn't need to cost $10,000 to hit a target at 1K.
PS Brand New never fitted No4 wood is available from Marstar.

Sometimes it's not all about the hardware you bring to a match.

I was told about a match held at a club. The match was shot at ranges from 25 to 150m and from several positions (prone, offhand, etc). It was open to ANY type of gun/optic combination. The winning rifle out of all the of gun and optic combinations?

A muzzleloader with peep sights. It was the first and last time they held that competition. Depending on the type of competition, sometimes skill of the shooter is a big factor.
