Was going to build myself a 17m2 on a Brno action, have the barrel and reamer. Got talked out of the Brno rifle by my brother in law now don`t know what i`m going to do. Has anybody built there own and what action did you use, don`t want to strip down my 10-22 and that would require a different bolt i believe. Just looking for ideas now, harvest is upon me and there will be little gun work for a couple of months.

I don't see much .17m2 ammo or rifles around anymore, I would maybe stay with a .17hmr. My opinion only but I don't think the .17hm2 is going to be around for long.
Even when I worked in the sporting goods store here we never had any in but this could just be a B.C. thing.

I hear you about the ammo availability. Just that a 22lr is only needed not a magnum. I kind of like different stuff as well, everybody and his dog has a hmr. As i said looking for options, to many toys not enough time.

I've been waiting almost a year for a .17hm2 barrel, for my 10/22, from Mystic, but the conversion is as simple as switching out the bolt handle for a heavy one and slapping a new barrel on it. Loads of these conversions on rimfirecentral. :D And .17hm2 ammo is available, but you'll probably be buying it by the brick and might have to talk your local guy into ordering it in for you.

17 hm2

The 17 HM2 is one of the lesser known rounds for varmint hunting. In today's society, we have to have the biggest, best, fastest, or whatever. The 17 HMR is favored by many people, but a large portion of these same people have never had any experience with the .17.HM2.

The 17 HM2 is a very accurate and potent cartridge for the purpose intended. One criticism is the lack of availability of ammunition, but I have not found that to be a problem, as I buy a carton at a time. And the price of the ammo is half the cost of the HMR, being $6.95 instead of $16.95. It is effective out to 125-150 yards, and I have taken several coyotes, a few racoons, and lots of gophers with mine.

Almost any modern made, good quality rifle that was chambered for the .22 Long Rifle can be made to work with the .17 HM2, but I think if I were going to build a personal rifle for myself, it would be a bolt action rifle of medium or higher price. An adjustable trigger would be a must, and a medium weight barrel nice. While most of the older rifles such as Winchester 52 or 75 rifles, Remington 540, 541, or 581 rifles, Brno, Anschutz, Kimber and so on have a great value in original form, there are enough "Bubba-ed" rifles that an action and possibly a stock could be bought and used.

My personal choice would be a Remington 581 action, with a second action screw added, and the trigger either modified for weight of pull, overtravel and sear engagement or an aftermarket trigger installed, to give a fine crisp pull of less than 3 pounds for a hunting rifle.

While I love the HM2 for occasional use, it will never replace the .22 long rifle for gopher or varmint shooting, and we have to recognize that fact. However, if I were going to shoot Southern Ontario Woodchucks, where 15 shots a day might be a lot, the the .17 HM2 would be my choice for a Field or Walking Around Rifle.

I`ll have to check into that info on rimfire central about only switching the bolt handle on a 10-22. already picked up some ammo at a gun show earlier. Barrel is a GM, only have to turn it down for proper shank and chamber. That may work, could always swipe my sons 10-22 to experiment with. Wouldn`t want to bugger up my old one. Come to think of it i know a local gunnut that has a 10-22 that doesn`t function properly. Are you listening sksavenger?

Just be aware of why most of the 10/22 conversions are no longer available. There have been several incidents of cases rupturing, causing magazines to be blown apart, and debris sent flying with the conversions. The 17mach2, is my favorite gopher cartridge, but I sold my 10/22 conversion kit, after hearing about the incidents.

Oh crap stubblejumper you ruined my evening, just as well i don`t like parts blowing off my rifles. Getting to old for that bulls##t. I kind of liked my original plan of a Brno, i really like my 452CZ. Just have to watch the forums and check the gunshow circut. I`ll have to learn to say no to the brother in law next time he wants to wheel and deal.

I run a 10/22 conversion. It has only had an issue once. Personally I only run Hornady ammo in my converted 10/22. I only run Eley in my CZ. That combo has worked well for me.

I have run probably around 6k of Hornady through mine with only that one incident with the Eley.

I also run a converted 10-22. I only run Hornady ammo in it, haven't had an issue yet. I have a GM fluted SS medium sporter barrel, wicked accurate. I have a LH Savage HB bolt in .17 M2 that eats up my Eley ammo.

Most case ruptures I've read about where due to dirty chambers and the cartridge not chambering fully causing it to fire out of battery. From what I've read keep it clean and you should have no problem, but it's your call. I plan on converting mine to hunt, not run 2000 rounds of in an afternoon, that's what the .22lr's are for. ;D
