Building a 300 H&H

Handloads - 30-06 cases are easy to come by.

EDIT: It's really only an idea right now.

32.99 for 50 brass for the H&H.... and 30 cal bullets are cheaper than the 338's... so it doesn't matter

The point was building a rifle without a lot of expense, due to having access to a cheap barrel. Not building a custom rifle with an expensive stock.

The gibbs has more case capacity than the .30-06 AI. The way I understand it, the Gibbs is more improved than the AI. The case is blown out with a steeper shoulder and shorter neck. You're looking at just under 3000 fps with a 180 gr bullet. It's about par with the H&H and the wsm and about 200 fps over .30-06 spg. I have spoken to several gibbs owners and they all rave about their cartidge. It's not a "magnum" and there is no belt. The only downside is forming brass and expensive dies. Don't get me wrong, the .300 H&H is a good cartridge and I would like to own one some day too.

There are tons of used .30-06 rifles in all price ranges, any one could be chambered to .30 gibbs without changing barrels, and tons of brass, cheap brass. I guess it comes down to what ever turns you on. My problem is that most of them turn me on.

Figured I'd revive this thread. Anyone building a "budget" 300? Mines coming together....700 action from Guntech with a barrel from a old 721. I'm just thinking about a stock now. Anyone have thoughts on a B&C Medalist for a gun of this weight and power. I'm thinking it will work well without breaking the bank:D

I'm working on one now. Originaly I bought a Model 70 Super Express in 375 H&H to rebarrel. But it looked too good to tear apart. I've since traded for another Model 70 that I'll convert instead. Looking for a blued 30-06 barrel now. Also have a bubba'd M17 that I'm contemplating making into a truck gun in 300 H&H.

Ya, I'd like to use a CRF action, but the 721 barrel came out of the EE for cheap and the 700 allows me to do alot of the "smithing" work myself. I still like that idea of using a Ruger action. We'll see how this first one goes. If your going to use a '06 barrel, what length will you end up with after recutting the chamber?

Just my opinion, but the 300 H+H seems like a nostalgic round and more fitting for a old custom action rather than a modern action. Why not look around for a P14 and put a new barrel and wood on it ?

You better try it first.
I tried 3-375H&H in two different UM actions.
One refused to feed all three and the other did...so so.

It seems that the mag boxes vary and so will your mileage.

I think you would be better off starting with a 300Win.
