Building a billet lower...

When I took the Machinist Tech program at SAIT people worked on the guns that they were building in the night gun building class they were taking. Apparently working on barrels and stuff is ok but we were told we could not try to build a reciever(or hash pipes). One hash pipe was made though.

The plan is to get it done up in Armacoat Multicam by Murdoc at Barret Arms (http://www.armacoat.net/) when I have the complete upper and lower built. As I'm building it in stages (no idea how far between completion of upper and lower) I might just spray paint it black until I finish the upper.

Hmm ... I have read, on forums where people know more about this stuff than I do, that surface coating is not enough to give the receiver additional surface strength. My understanding was that you could expect the pins to egg out the holes in the receiver in time, unless it was properly anodized. I'm sure it would last long enough to test a prototype without significant wear, but I think proper anodizing would be recommended. But what do I know ...

I recently attended an information session at a local college, hoping to sign up for a machinist pre-apprentice course. Unfortunately, I and the other guy there interested in the same thing were told that the course had been cancelled for a year due to lack of interest. :( I'll try again in a year, or maybe sooner, somewhere else. I'm glad to see you've gotten into your course and are already on your way to making use of it. Keep up the good work. As always, we will expect pictures once you have anything worth showing.

Why not get a license?

You cannot build firearms for sale without a firearms business license with manufacturing.

Perhaps you could fund the license process with a few pre-orders.
(Once the design and manufacturing process was established.)

Does anyone have info on getting this license?

The process for getting a manufacturing license stipulates many things, one which I'm sure Armedsask would have troubles fulfilling. I do believe you require your own industrial facility where you wish to construct them, and that they don't hand out licenses to smalloutfits, and it is VERY costly I hear to obtain.

I'm not sure about the firearm law, but commerce law clearly states that merchandise once given as "gift" can be sold without regards to applied laws regarding "original intent" of merchandise. This means you can give it to someone, thus removing applied law regarding manufacturing with intent for distribution, then have those given the receiver sell them. Then the proceeding can be "given" to you by your friends, as long as the amount is below $1000 as "lawful gift" without you having to pay tax on it.
Now that sounds like laundering, but it's not. :) it's just grey area of law concerning commerce of merchandise.
But I'm not sure it applies when it concerns firearm.

You could do this, just don't get caught because someone's gonna get cranky when they cotton on, it's not going to fly legally.

Your right, completely slipped my mind. It will be anodized some where and then done up by Barret Arms. I would have checked on that any way when I came to that stage.

For the mag well the plan is to send it off the Dlask and have them cut it for me. They broach the mag well. This way I'll know it will be right.

Due to a few PM's I've received claiming I'm doing something illegal, please go read my original post again and take note of the SMILEY next to my comment about making some to sell. I'm no planning to sell anything illegally. Also, I'm not breaking any laws. I'm not worried about going to jail, so why should you worry?

I've had a couple PM's about it.

One person even said the CFC will probably shut down my school and get me expelled if they find out I worked on it there.

Wendy's on this board?

Thanks for the offer Ardent, I'll probably you take you up on that. Probably going to be at least a month before I get it too that point.

Here's one of my drawings to give you an idea what it will look like:

I hope to get a 3D model done up this weekend.

Hmmm, worry because, 1) we'd miss you 2) the flack generated would reflect poorly on the site 3) the media would love to get a juicey story about gun owners building machine guns.....

I missed the smiley, my bad:redface: ,that being said, I wonder what would happen if you made a reciver for someone, stamped the existing serial number on it and destroyed the original? Would that be legal?

We still haven't determined if it would be legal to build them and give them out for free.

As a side note, does a serial number have to be a number? Could my serial number be: "FU-WENDY" or "FU-CFC"?

I believe it can, but it may have to have at least 1 number in it, though I'm guessing. Played with the idea of a series of Paul Martin Specials for a while....

Sounds good, looks good, I'm local to Dlask in the winters, so I can pick it up from them if the magwell's the last portion done, anodize it black, and fire it back to you. I can do another colour though I assume black's what you're going for and it's what the batch I'll be doing is.
